It has been an extremely hot few days here in Ireland and the heavy rain that fell in some parts of Ireland over the weekend is already a distant memory. What won’t be soon forgotten though were some of the great catches by anglers here in Ireland last week. History was made on Sunday when Garbolino Team Ireland took the silver medal at the 4th FIPSed World Feeder Fishing Championships on Inniscarra Lake, Coachford, County Cork. Ireland has produced medallists in International events over the years but this is the first time the National Team have been on the podium, second to the all-conquering Team England who entered the competition at hot favourites after the five practise days. The Netherlands threatened Ireland’s position throughout the two days of the competition finally finishing with a Bronze, just 6kg separated the second and third positions showing what a close competition it was. Elsewhere in the coarse world there were good bags of fish, bream hybrids and tench, reported from a number of Cavan venues including Arva, Cootehill and Ballinamore. The IADA Open was fished on Lough Muckno and catches there confirmed its reputation amongst the visiting anglers. Feeder tactics are producing some lovely fishing on Lough Ramor with hybrids, roach and perch making up the bags. Oaklands Fishery in the south east continues to fish well while up in Lough Gall anglers might be interested in targeting carp to 30lb. Brother Lake was the setting for the Carrickmacross Coarse Angling and Youth Development Club Fishing Summer Camp 2014. 28 budding anglers took part and we wish them well on the angling journey.
Hot weather often puts an end to summer piking but two English anglers fishing in the Foxford area had numerous takes fishing surface lures and large poppers on the fly rod and finished up with 7 pike up to 95cm.
The weekends rain was warmly welcomed by salmon anglers and there was a great increase in catches, particularly in the Connemara area. The week ending 19th July saw the Kylemore Abbey Fishery add a further 16 fish to the book for 23 rod days. Delphi had a big increase in salmon in the system, but they were not easily got. The sea trout fishing there picked up though and 50 fish were caught for the week. The spates saw good fishing on the Erriff where their week’s catch totalled 14 salmon and 44 sea trout. The Galway Fishery is in fantastic order at the moment with perfect water levels and great numbers of fish showing, the catch for the last couple of weeks is 136 salmon. Despite the low water levels on the Moy and humid conditions which prevailed for much of the week, a total of 431 salmon were reported bringing the season total to 2,704. With 72 salmon reported, the Moy Fishery saw its best week of the year. The weather slowed things down on Lough Currane. A few salmon were taken each day and some good sea trout fishing was possible at times with a mix of juniors and fish to 3lbs or so particularly over the weekend.. Salmon fishing picked up on the Bandon at the weekend too and the first fish in a while for landed following the long dry spell.
Good tope fishing was reported from Red Bay on the Antrim Coast where Dutch anglers have enjoyed good sport. Tope also feature on the east coast and Rob McClean was a Catch of the Week contender with his lovely 171cm tope which weighed in at 64lb 2oz. Good pollack and cod fishing is reported from Kilmore Quay where cod to 10lbs have been brought tot he boat. Charter anglers in Youghal reported some great sport and junior angler had a fine 19lb 7oz conger amongst a haul of 16 species. Further west in Unionhall anglers had good fishing for skate and took 16 other species too. Sharks featured in the catches of Kerry anglers with some good ling also falling to the whole mackerel baits. The bass fishing from boat and shore continues in Cork Harbour where local anglers are making a huge contribution to the bass tagging programme that is ongoing there. Bass were also the quarry for one Dublin based angler fishing in Kerry, his best result was three fish in 20 minutes.
There is still reasonable Peter fishing on Lough Arrow. However, night fishing has not been as productive as in previous weeks. The warm and humid weather resulted in reduced angling activity on Loughs Conn and Cullin this week but those who did venture out were rewarded with some good fishing. One angler had 23 trout for 30lb in 3 days. Angling on Mask could only be described as tough, particularly for the second half of the week as high pressure dominated the weather. It was a similar tale at Lough Corrib where there was good fishing in the early part of the week on the Corrib but the settled weather over the weekend slowed down the fishing and very few anglers took to the water. Wrapped in a humid cloak of mid-summer heat Lough Sheelin fished well this week and angling numbers noticeably increased towards the weekend. The best of the fishing was in the evenings when some heart stopping sport was had by anglers. Congratulations go to the Mallow A Team who won the Munster Youth Fly Fishing Championships on Lough Leane at the weekend in tough conditions. Eoin Curtin, who won the individual competition, is heading out to Poland on Wednesday July 23rd with the Irish team to compete in the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships and we wish Eoin and his team mates every success.
Tight lines especially here in Ireland,
