Wychavon Championship Qualifier

Written By: Matt Godfrey
On Date: 12/8/2014

Evesham Town And Ferry Waters Saturday 9th August 2014
65 Fished Despite a little rain, the river wasn’t far from its usual level and pace on Saturday, but with the big storm approaching and lots of pressure changes, the match proved to be very difficult. Leading the pack was Evesham’s Paul Jackson, who took 6-12-0 of perch and eels, as well as a bonus chub from in-form peg 52. It was a combination of pole and feeder tactics with bronze maggots, chopped worm and casters that scored on the day. Close behind was Alcester Sports Steve Hemming. Drawn on peg 24, it was maggot feeder tactics cast towards the underwater weeds on the far bank that accounted for his 6-6-0 net of perch and eels. A similar ploy helped Brian Powell into third place from peg 45 with 6-2-0, while a pole caught tench pushed Gloucester’s Tony Davis into fourth place on peg 72 with 5-11-0.

Result:
1 Paul Jackson (Evesham) 6-12-0 (Peg 52)
2 Steve Hemming (Alcester Sports) 6-6-0 (Peg 24)
3 Brian Powell (Evesham) 6-2-0 (Peg 45)
4 Tony Davis (Gloucester) 5-11-0 (Peg 72)
5 Kevin Ellaby 5-0-0 (Peg 10)

Evesham Championship Qualifier
Evesham Town And Ferry Waters

65 Fished

After the effects of Hurricane Bertha swept across the midlands, the river held a good tinge of colour and some extra page for Sunday’s match. This was certainly reflected in the weights, and it seemed that this freshen-up did the river good, with Karl Biddle winning the match from peg 1 with 27-0-0. On his very first visit to Evesham, Karl took a mixed bag, containing six bream, some chunky perch as well as some eels and small fish, falling to feeder tactics with chopped worms, casters and maggots. Second place went to Tri-Cast Wales’ Andy Johnstone on peg 5, who had a cracking 17-0-0 bag of chunky hybrids from peg 5. It was pole-fished maggot over groundbait that did the damage at 14m in the main flow. Matt Webb managed to catch these fish from peg 86 too, but took a lower weight of 11-15-0, which included a smattering of eels and perch too. Fourth and Fifth place both fell to anglers who caught barbel – a species there has made few appearances so far this season. Jim Brockie managed a 10-10-0 fish in his 11-6-0 bag, while a single fish weighing 9-1-0 put Tim Noke in fifth place.

Result
1 Karl Biddle (Hereford) 27-0-0 (Peg 1)
2 Andy Johnstone (Tri-Cast Wales) 17-0-0 (Peg 5)
3 Matt Webb 11-15-0 (Peg 86)
4 Jim Brockie (Alcester Sports) 11-6-0 (Peg 20)
5 Tim Noke (Droitwitch) 9-1-0 (Peg 30)
