Irish Angling Update Ezine

Written By: Myles Kelly On Date: 21/11/2014 The recent mild weather encouraged a few more anglers out in the past week although there has been very heavy rain and many of our midland rivers connected to the River Shannon are badly flooded. Currently changeable weather together with thick fog have made conditions for going afloat on inland waters dangerous and anglers should consider the weather conditions before venturing out. There was a lot more coarse fishing reported in the past week and a ※knock up§ (i.e. a locally organised fishing competition) was organised by the Ballybay Angling Association last week at Annaghierin Lake and 18 anglers took part with Carrickmacross specialist Niall McKitterick winning with 6.590 kilos of mainly small roach. Most waters in the locality are very flooded at present. The Ulster Coarse Fishing Federation hosted five teams of eight anglers on the Newry Canal last Sunday and small roach were caught on the pole and Johnny McKinley Lurgan AC was the individual winner with 100 fish for 5.460 Kgs. His team won the day with 17 points with Erne anglers second and East Belfast third on the day. There were super weights recorded at the first winter league match of the South Munster CAC with excellent roach catches on Inniscarra Lake. Trevor Platt won the day with 37 lb. 2 oz. to win by 2 oz. from second place Pawel Swistun. Many double figure and several catches over 20 lb. were recorded on the day. Eddie Long PRO of the Naas and District Anglers reported that the first round of their winter league had to be moved to a side canal channel last Sunday as the River Barrow was badly in flood near Athy. Fishing was excellent with two joint winners Kevin Hodson and Trev Campbell tied first place with 20 lb. 5 oz. It was another good week for pike fishing and angling guide Rob Love enjoyed some good pike fly fishing at Carton Lake near Maynooth last week. Gary Seales and a group of angling friends from Co Down are regular visitors to the Ballinamore / Ballyconnell area and Gary landed the best pike on the trip of 7.5 kg. on deadbait at Garadice Lake. Angling guide Mick Flanagan reported some nice pike fishing on several midland loughs in the past week along with some nice perch. The Polish angling club Fishmaniak held a boat competition on Lough Derravarragh and 13 anglers fished on a very flooded lough but managed to catch and release 22 pike but most fish were small with the best fish of 79 cms. The Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs reports that Newbridge & District are the new Inter Club Champions on some very flooded small loughs in Co. Cavan. They managed to beat Ardee with 14 pike weighing 52 lb. 1 oz. There was only a small bit of sea angling news but angling guide Jason Nash who I met at the Irish Fly Fair in Galway last weekend, reported some hard bass fishing at several venues in West Cork. Jason landed a few nice bass on lures but lost several fish which were coming short to the baits on an ideal fishing morning. Daniel Brosnan (PRO) for Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club reports on their latest competition at Blennerville and good catches of flounders were recorded on the day and Phil Ord won with 464 points. Daniel Brosnan the PRO landed the best flatfish a 33 cms Flounder which wins the Catch of the Week There was some lovely rainbow trout fishing reported from Courtlough Fishery near Balbriggan again this week taken on fly. There was some very big trout both rainbow and browns reported from the Ardaire Springs Angling Centre in Mooncoin in Co. Kilkenny in the past week.
