Very strong winds and wet weather prevail today at the time of writing although it is mild today but the normal cold conditions are due to return in the next day or so. It has been very mixed weather in the past week but there was a fair bit of angling both on inland waters and at sea. Charter skipper Dave Edwards was on his last deep sea trip of the season out on his boat “Tigger” last weekend and he was rewarded with a good mixed catch of Codling, Pollack, Wrasse, Coalies and a lovely Ling of 15 lb. which is our Catch of the Week. Charter skipper Kit Dunne also tied up his boats in Wicklow for this season following a great season featuring some specimen fish for his many clients in a very successful year. Angling guide Sean Jordan enjoyed his last foray of the year in south Wexford catching some lovely bass on a variety of Lures.
There was some very big brown and rainbow trout reported from the Ardaire Springs Fishery in Kilkenny in the past week. There were many other good reports from other put and take fisheries also.
Up in Ballybay, Co. Monaghan the local angling club are holding regular matches all through the winter and catches of roach, hybrids and some bream have been taken regularly. In the midlands, perch fishing is proving very popular with Lough Ennell the place to go to catch big perch on many different types of lures. In Ballyconnell on the Shannon Erne Canal 19 brave anglers fished a charity match and small fish were caught in the very cold and icy conditions.
A group of Belgium and Greek anglers had great fun for pike while fishing on Rye Lake in Carton near Maynooth. David Boyle from Collinstown won the fur and feather pike competition on Lough Glore last weekend. Brenda Montgomery reported from Lough Derravarragh that only the hardiest of anglers were out on the lake these days but they were catching some nice Pike nonetheless.
In other news it is nice to report that in the biggest angling newspaper in the UK, the Angling Times that Ireland was voted the favourite fishing destination for English anglers. There is plenty of other news in our news section of the Update and competition notices as well. As always please be careful while fishing at this time of year. Wear a lifejacket and wear plenty of layers of clothing as it is extremely cold now and the fishing is harder but still enjoyable if you are prepared for the wintery conditions.
