Northern sea bass stocks continue to worsen

Written By: Latest news from EFTTA and EFTTEX
On Date: 22/9/2016

The Northern sea bass stock is in a worse state than last year and will continue to worsen next year. Scientists have advised no bass catches next year would be the sensible thing to do. That was the baseline when a delegation from EFTTA and the EAA met recently with the European Commission.
“Therefore, the Commission cannot just roll over management measures from this year into 2017 and it certainly cannot allow any increase in landings,” said EFTTA’s Public Affairs Officer Jan Kappel, a member of the nine-people strong delegation, and continued “but to avoid catching bass is not possible neither for commercial fishers nor recreational anglers. The scientists also outlined alternative but, of course, slower pace strategies to rebuild the stock. I am pretty sure the Member States won’t go for a total closure but discuss and choose among the alternatives. Therefore, it is important that we secure that recreational angling is not again the sector to be hit hardest by the catch reduction measures to come“.
EFTTA and EAA invited to Romania

The importance of angling and its benefit to tourism and the local economy will be the subject of a talk delivered by representatives of EFTTA and the European Anglers Alliance (EAA) when they visit Romania next month.
A delegation has been invited to the east European country by Romanian MEP Norica Nicolai (left) to a special event inside the Senate to deliver a presentation on the environmental benefits and economic impact of recreational fishing. It will highlight the importance of fishing and how developing the sport can affect the country. It will also talk about the sustainability of the sport and discuss the effects that hydropower has on fish population and the state of the Danube Delta.
• A report on the meeting will be published in December's Newslines.
Amsterdam debrief at next EFTTA Board meeting
The next EFTTA Board Meeting will take place in Amsterdam on Tuesday, November 15. There will be a debriefing on EFTTEX 2016 and Board members will also be looking ahead to next year’s event in Budapest, including the marketing strategy for the show and exhibitor bookings to date, including the beginning of open bookings which start in early October. Accounts for both EFTTA and EFTTEX will also come under scrutiny.
Visitors are welcome as always and should contact Janet Doyle for further details.

EFTTEX booking opens
again in October
With another sold out EFTTEX on the horizon, would-be exhibitors need to act fast to ensure that they get a booth at next year’s show in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.
Booking for the event opens again in October so keep your eyes on the EFTTEX website for details on how you can book your place at the European showpiece.
The EFTTEX website contains all the information exhibitors need to know about the show as well as a special report on the last event in Amsterdam.
Partying on EFTTEX agenda in Budapest

EFTTA representatives Janet Doyle, Victoria Seymour and Victoria Rogers will have partying in mind when they travel to Budapest on September 26. Not that they are planning too much revelry for themselves of course. The main objective of their three-day trip to Hungary is to find a venue for the gala dinner and Best New Product Awards presentation that traditionally takes place on the second evening of the big European trade show.
The key criteria are good transport links for the partygoers and a location with a ‘wow factor’, which was certainly the case when EFTTEX was last in Buda-pest and the evening was hosted by the Gundel Restaurant, rated one of the top ten restaurants in Europe.
Expectations for the show are high following the resounding success of 2009, considered by most to be one of the best EFTTEX shows of the last ten years.
