It got colder and we got the snow and ice that last week’s forecasts predicted but brighter clearer weather followed. Still, it’s been cold enough to slow down the fishing at a number of venues, though the settled conditions have been some consolation Some of the highlights..

Murky canal makes for poor piking on a cold day in Offaly
The Shannon at Portumna was running about 5 inches high and coloured at the weekend and the Portumna Coarse Angling Club found the fishing particularly hard going on Sunday. The Go and Catch Feeder Fishing Team also reported slow fishing at the weekend, this time on Muckno in the north east. The story from Lough Garadice was similar – small catches of small fish.

Pike anglers didn’t have it much easier and fishing on canal and big lake venues was generally hard enough. The Midlands Pike Anglers did get some big pike from Ree on Sunday but although 4 fish over the 100cm mark were recorded the fishing was still described as tough overall. On Lough Sillan the Go&Catch anglers had better fishing than in previous years at the venue for the time of year and the best fish on the day was 105cm, but again fishing was described as slow. Fishing the Grand Canal, the Tullamore and District Angling Club also reported a hard day with murky water and freezing temperatures.
We have just one sea angling report this week. Tramore and Waterford SAC fished the last competition in their Master Angler series at Tramore on Sunday. On a cold, still night 53 fish were landed, 13 by Kevin Curran who won the day and was also awarded title Master Angler.
Met Eireann tells us that the extended outlook is for continued settled weather as high pressure dominates. Saturday, Sunday and Monday will each be similar days with temperatures in the afternoon recovering to between about 7 and 11 degrees, the lower temperatures on Saturday and in the east, the higher temperatures along coasts of the west and south. Overnight temperatures will be between 3 and 6 degrees, coldest in the south. Winds will be light throughout between west and northwest. It’ll be mainly dry throughout the weekend with only the slightest risk of showers on northern coasts. The further outlook for the early days of the next week is for the winds to back to the southwest but for it to remain mostly dry.
