The weather has been a bit colder but there is worse to come as Storm Caroline approaches. Angling reports from around the country suggest that the fishing has not been all that bad, and there were some really impressive catches by coarse and sea anglers in the last week…Some of the highlights...

Average catch on Lower Bann exceeds 13kg in weekend match
Sunday was dull and not too cold on Lough Muckno but match anglers there found it hard to get nets of fish into double figures. Better fishing was had on the Barrow Canal at Bagenalstown where weights to 21lb were returned by the Oaklands/New Ross Coarse Angling Club. The most impressive reports were from the Lower Bann where East Belfast Coarse Angling Club fished an event that saw an average weight of 13kg returned by the 21 anglers participating. Michael Cormican fished 7m whips using 12 and 15g floats for a superb 27.840 kg. Possibly unprecedented in a December match.
Last Friday Mr Denis Naughten, Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, launched two new angling developments by Inland Fisheries Ireland at Emlaghroyan, Roscommon, and ‘The Mudflats’, Carrick-On-Shannon, County Leitrim. Eoin Conway wins Catch of the Week with a 16lbs 2oz pike from the Royal Canal
Pike anglers were out in force in the last week and one of the best pike we heard about was 8 year old Eoin Conway’s 16lb 2oz Royal Canal beauty. Eoin had been fishing with his Dad near mullingar when he caught his fine pike. Staying in the midlands, Lough Derravaragh has been producing some decent double figure pike to about 15lbs recently. Deadbaits, jerkbaits, spoons, spinners and soft plastic have all had some success. On the River Inny the majority of pike met have been jacks. The Newbridge and District Pike Anglers held a very well attended open at Blessington Lake on Sunday. They had 105 seniors and 22 juniors taking part but despite a lot of optimism the fishing was hard going as the lake had risen a number of inches following last week’s heavy rains.
Shore anglers at Kilcoole fished through a flat calm at the weekend. Not great conditions but some better flounder and coalies were caught and released. Moving south there are still only sporadic reports of cod at Waterford, Youghal and Monkstown. Schoolie bass, however, are still being caught in good numbers in Cork Harbour by Richie Ryan’s clients even as sea temperatures dip to 8.5 degrees. Charter boat anglers at Courtmacsherry also fished through flat calm conditions this week. The fishing was not as fine though and although coalfish to 9lb were boated it was tough going in general. Further south at Union Hall better catches were had and although the big whiting they had hoped to target were not to be found some decent cod, ling, pollack, dabs and gurnard made up for it. Bait was reported to be plentiful. Moving all the way north to Donegal there were more great shore angling reports from the Killybegs Mariners. Flounders to 40cm were caught and released on night and daytime tides this week.
Rainbow trout anglers fishing winter leagues at Annamoe and Rathcon found the fish willing at both venues. The Ratchcon event saw 18 anglers catch 62 rainbow trout to 68cm, while in Annamoe 13 anglers had a total of 33 fish.
Salmon anglers are reminded that this is their last week to make comments on or objections to the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme (Amendment) Regulations, 2017 to provide for the management of the wild salmon and sea trout fishery by Inland Fisheries Ireland in 2018. Met Eireann says there will be occasional wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow on Friday, and further accumulations in northern counties and over high ground. There will be severe frosts on Friday night. Saturday is to be mostly dry but very cold day with varying cloud and sunny spells. Frost may linger in places and temperatures at best will range 1 to 3 degrees. Winds will be very light. Sunday will start wet but other than outbreaks of sleet and snow over Ulster during the day, most other places will be dry. It’ll stay cold, but bright. Severe frost after dark. The outlook is for cold but dry weather.
