Royal boost for our campaigns to improve rivers

Written By: Mark Lyod
On Date: 21/6/2018

The Angling Trust has been taking its campaigns for restoring fish stocks right to the top over the past month, with a series of high profile events involving numerous MPs, the Environment Minister, the Secretary of State for the Environment and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. The Trust had an opportunity to remind Prince Charles, a fellow angler, of the importance of engaging anglers in campaigns to improve our rivers when he spoke at a catchment management summit in Moreton-in-Marsh recently. We also presented a copy of our highly-acclaimed Saving the Earth report to Secretary of State Michael Gove when he visited an exemplary farm in Herefordshire.

Clubs and fisheries - apply now for share of £300,000

At least £300,000 of fishing licence income is being made available to angling clubs and fisheries based in England through the latest round of funding from the Angling Improvement Fund. The money will be used to help fund general fishery improvements, river access, measures to control predation and improving access-for-all on still waters and canals.

Update on campaign to control cormorants

Thank you to everyone who reported sightings of cormorants and goosanders for our second Cormorant Watch initiative, which recently came to an end. This has provided us with useful information about the distribution of birds over the past winter and we’ll be using this information to press for more improvements in the management of fish eating birds in England and Wales. The Angling Trust is helping the BBC promote the programme, and the benefits of angling, with a series of local radio interviews on Monday morning. More information

Fish Legal threaten action over failure to protect wrasse

Fish Legal has threatened Defra and Natural England with legal action for failing to take a precautionary approach to the regulation of the lucrative wrasse fishery which has sprung up in the inshore waters of England to supply the Scottish salmon farming industry. The wrasse are caught in pots and transported live to Scotland where they are used as 'cleaner fish' to try and reduce the plague of sea lice which has infested fish in open-water cages. Speak Up on climate change
Climate change affects all anglers. Warming sea temperatures are a factor in the decline in Atlantic salmon and the likely increases in drought incidents puts further pressure on river systems. Next month, the Climate Coalition is calling on people from all over the UK to join their Speak Up Week to show MPs how climate change is affecting everyday lives.
