Hi All No email last week as I was in the field working with a journalist. I’m on leave next week so reports will be available on www.fishinginireland.info
We are currently experiencing some amazing weather, with unbroken sunshine, light winds and near record-breaking temperatures for this part of Ireland - we had 30 degrees yesterday in Galway, and the tar on my local road melted!
Trout The heatwave is really impacting on water levels and water temperatures, with trout fishing mostly restricted to early morning and late evening.

Salmon
In the run-up to the hot weather we had some decent salmon fishing, and there are plenty of grilse running in Galway. I would expect great sport in all the Connemara fisheries once the weather breaks.

Sea Angling
Sea angling is really picking up now – the tope finally arrived in Galway Bay, and reef fishing has been very productive too. The first sharks should be reported soon as well.

Please note – with river water temperatures now reaching over 20C, fish, especially salmon, will be much more stressed - while we promote catch-and-release this may not be feasible during a heatwave as there is a high probability the fish will not survive. C&R is currently not permitted at the Galway Fishery until the water temps fall below 20C, and anglers should bear this in mind when deciding to go fishing.
Remember to stay safe on the water – wear a PFD, tell someone where you are going, bring a mobile phone, and don’t forget a hat and the Factor 50!
Kind regards
Kevin
