Fish Pal

Written By: Anne Woodcock
On Date: 21/1/2019

There is always a buzz on opening day. The first cast of the season and anticipation of the first fish. The welcome site of the bothy at lunchtime with a chance to catch up with friends old and new over a hot brew and some hearty food.
We are coming to you live today from the Tay with Facebook posts of openings across the catchment. The "Upper" Ness also opens today, the "Lower" part being delayed to let the late spawners have their way. The River Eden in Cumbria also joins the party today. Tight lines to all out at the opening of the new season.
This evening we are launching a new monthly radio show called Countryside with CVFM Radio. FishPal will be hosting the one hour show chatting all things countryside. This evening guests will be joining us from the river Tay - read more.
If like us at FishPal you are itching to cast a line this year, whatever species, please call the office Monday to Friday 9am-5pm on 01573 470612. Alternatively visit the FishPal site for news and information on over 555 fisheries covering the UK and Iceland. Fishing permits can be purchased online 24/7.
Tight lines

Fishing For 2019
Fishery owners, angling clubs and river managers have been adding availability across the FishPal site this month. We still have more to add, so if there is a fishery with little or no availability please give Tom a call in the office on 01573 470612 or email tom@fishpal.com
This month we have added more fishing for the Rivers' Tay, Dee, Spey, Tweed, Tyne, Annan, Findhorn, Ness, Nith, as well as in Yorkshire. You can find fishing permits and information on over 555 fisheries by clicking this link.
We understand and appreciate that this may be the first fishing trip you are organising or that you may be new to the sport. Everyone at FishPal goes fishing and is as passionate as you are about our sport. We are just a call away on 01573 470612 and the offices are open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

Caledonia Fly Company

Well another year of anticipation is here, will I hook that fish of a life time on a frosty morning on the mighty river Tay? Who knows but we are all hoping you do, there is nothing like that first day out of the new season.
Now down to giving you a little advice on what flies to use for the start of the season. I have fished the Tay for many seasons and with the water running at 2' 5", it's looking good for a cast with the fly and a Springer ripping line off the reel. My choice is the Blue Angel, fantastic spring pattern can be fished in a design of your choice, copper or Aluminium tubes or even a double if the water is low.
Caledonia Fly Company thanks you for supporting us and wish you all a very good day and season
Tight lines
Karen & Malcolm

Malloch Trophy Winner

Over the years the Malloch Trophy has been won by angling legends and this years winner Philip Black is one of them in our opinion.
It comes as no surprise that the winner of the most prestigious trophy in Atlantic salmon fishing is out on a river in all weathers. He is constantly checking the FishPal site for river levels and can tell us what's been caught and where to fish. He really is a true all round angler and a well deserved winner - read more.

Spring Fishing & Sinking Lines

Early season fishing, although described as spring fishing should really be classed as winter fishing. Rivers are often high, cold and spring salmon are hard to come by – but totally worth the effort!
The water temperatures are low, meaning the fish will be found in different places to where we would expect to find them lying in the warmer summer months. Colder water means a less oxygenated environment. This means the fish are less likely to waste precious energy holding in the faster streams. The fish will be holding in the slower pools and will be deep in the water column.
To give ourselves the best chance of connecting with a springer, we need to present our flies to the zone where the fish are. The easiest way to get the fly to the fish for as long as possible is through the use of sinking lines. These can be either skagits or shooting heads - read more.

#KEEPEM Wet

Please remember that the fish you catch during the coming weeks may be kelts leaving the system or Springers that will be in the river until they spawn. Please take photographs of fish in the net or in water.
Please keep sending in river and fish photographs into the office on info@fishpal.com and/or anne@fishpal.com

Finally
Thank you for purchasing a day, week, syndicate and season permit this year. In doing so you are supporting the river your fishing, its infrastructure and the local community from the ghillies and guides who look after you, to the fishing tackle shops who help you with flies and tackle, and the accommodation providers and restaurants.
Time is running out if you would like to enter the Bemersyde Trophy adult and junior trophies for the Tweed and the Callum Mackenzie Cup for juniors on the Dee. Please send your entries into anne@fishpal.com or call the office on 01573 470612 for further information.
