Friday week I had the pleasure of attending the Fisheries Management Scotland Conference in Edinburgh entitled "Salmon and People in a Changing World." An audience of interesting like minded people from around the world, all meeting to get stuck into some really challenging and topical agenda items that certainly made for some great debate.
Given that everything that was discussed is underpinned by the fact that without anglers we do not have an industry, my only criticism of the day was that the angling community was not represented in any of the workshops which to me seems like an obvious omission which needs rectified for future conferences - read more.
Yesterday I was on the Tay at Dalmarnock beat, visiting John Olav from Norway with 9 students who are all here to experience Scottish Salmon fishing as part of their college course in Norway - read more.

Hebrides Trout

The Outer Hebrides is a game angler's dream location. Whether you are a solitary angler, form part of a larger group or are simply looking for a tranquil family vacation, the Outer Hebrides has it all.
If your target species is large brown trout they are often caught throughout the season. However some of the weightier fish, particularly the elusive ferox trout, tend to be caught in early and late season. April and May are generally considered good months for the larger fish on the Hebrides. Find fishing.

Feedback received from anglers fishing the last 10 days.....
Castle Grant, River Spey. The ghillie was attentive and very helpful. He had a vast knowledge of his beat and was very willing to share his knowledge. One salmon at 20lbs caught on a Monkey Fly.
Dochfour, River Ness. One of the most well kept river banks I've seen. Ghillie goes above and beyond. I'd fish here every day if I could.
Rutherford, River Tweed. Tremendous bit of water & ghillie knowledge priceless. One Springer landed & possibly another lost!
Dumfries Burgh, River Nith. Allan Blyth went above and beyond to make sure we had a good day. One salmon caught.
Meikleour Fishing, River Tay. What an amazing couple of days. 22lb springer on the fly and the brace of a lifetime. Ian was fantastic in the boat, very knowledgeable and full of useful tips. Both Callum and Ian were great fun to chat to and gain knowledge from. I look forwards to returning. Three Springers 22lb, 18lb on the fly and a 8lb on spinner.

Tweed Trout Fishing School

Anglers visiting the Scottish Borders since the opening of the trout season are enjoying some fruitful guided fishing days with Tweed Guide. Last Thursday Ralph Kasper from the USA fished with Tweed Guide and caught a specimen brown trout on a March Brown.

Fishing Reports

The Tweed anglers caught 66 salmon and 10 sea trout last week. Fish are continuing to push their way into the middle river with 21 fish now reported above Kelso and as far up as Bemersyde. Find Fishing.
The Dee had good fishing conditions last week with 36 fish up to 21lbs. The Norwegian party caught 6 fish with Petter Gaustad topping the list with 4, 3 of 9 lbs from Pantoch and Birkwood Window and a 5 lber from Hollybush on Invery and Tilquhillie beat.
Bjorn Salquist had 2 at Ballogie.
John Sumner had a liced fish at Carlogie and Wayne Napier-Gibbons had cracker of 21lb on Saturday. Find Fishing.
The Tay system continued to produce top quality hard fighting spring salmon last week. 56 fish were landed, with fish weighing in excess of 20 pounds on almost a daily basis.
There were bent rods galore on the Meikleour and Upper Islamouth Beat on Monday with 4 springers landed. It was a day to remember for Mr Tim Wood who landed 2 fish on the fly weighing 18 and 22 pounds.
Mr Martin Wilson was in the thick of the action again landing a terrific 23 pounder from the Portnacraig Bank. Find Fishing.

Four Marathons For Charity
This April, four ex-Army friends, Will Davies, Freddy Paske, Richard Chambers and Will Tod will complete three marathons in three days along three of Scotland's iconic salmon rivers – the Oykel, Spey and Tweed in aid of the Atlantic Salmon Trust.
Will Davies will then travel to London to complete the fourth on day four of the challenge. He will be running the Virgin London marathon - read more.

A day fishing on Birgham Dub on Tweed is one lot within the auction.
The Atlantic Salmon Trust 2019 annual auction is now live and you can view lots and bid via their dedicated auction site.
The AST have launched Sponsor A Smolt. You will be able to name your smolt and choose which river you would like to sponsor a smolt from.
These smolts start their incredible migration from the headwaters of The Spey, The Deveron, The Findhorn, The Ness, The Oykel, The Shin and The Connon.
