Prospects & General Comments:
The weather remained dry through the end of August and in to the early part of September keeping the river height just below summer level. There are a few salmon that have entered the Eden on the lower beats but not enough water yet to get them upstream or indeed encourage more in from the estuary. The water quality is very good on the Eden and the trout and grayling fishing has just been outstanding. Not much in the way of hatches during the day but the fish are certainly on to most methods especially a team of North Country Spiders swung across and down. There have been a lot of grayling showing up on the lower beats of late, from fingerlings to adult fish around the two pound mark with the majority caught at around three quarters of a pound, great sport is being had. The leaves on the trees are beginning to turn now and the swallows are getting restless, there is a feel of autumn in the air and we just need a splash of rain now to get things moving on the salmon front and bring the back-end run in.

The 12th of September and still no sign of rain, the river is well below summer height and there is a dearth of salmon due to the low and warm water conditions. On the positive side, the trout and grayling fishing is improving by the day with trout up to the three pound plus size. There are good shoals of grayling in most of the pools and runs of herling and larger sea trout coming off the tides which have been massive this week and now are dropping off.

A few fish nosing in from the estuary, some with colour which tells a story of how long they have been waiting out in the salt for the promise of a little rain on the 23rd. The water temperature is at 61oF and probably at minus 10 inches or so below summer level, a drought condition that we have not seen since 1976, no wonder the salmon are reluctant to enter the river. This has been the same scenario all over, not just the Eden or indeed the U.K but Newfoundland, Iceland and Norway as well. Is it just one of those cyclical dips? We will have to wait and see as there are many factors affecting these fish that we do not always understand, no use getting depressed about the future of the salmon stock just yet, we have been here before and only time will tell.
On the positive side, the trout and grayling fishing remains steady away especially on nymphs and spiders and there are plenty of herling (young sea trout) along with a few bigger fish coming off the tides which bodes well for the future.
