Prospects & General Comments:
April,
A few fish caught and seen up and down the river as far up as the Lazonby area.
Water levels are dropping in very nicely for the lower beats, on the 14th the water height is a six inches and 10oC. This week we have seen salmon coming in off the tides and on the 13th David Richens landed one on a Spring Boyo at just over nine pounds. On the 14th Peter Robinson got broke on a good fish using a pot bellied pig. Cool north westerly winds are keeping the trout down but there have been trout up to two pound taken on nymphs. The spring fish are running late this year.
17th, much warmer conditions are encouraging good surface activity with the trout, big hatches of grannom, large dark and iron blue.
18th, Summer height, wind direction now south-westerly. A ten pound fish for Steve Fairburn from Grinsdale on the fly.
19th-21st, very cold north-westerly wind again which has slowed the trout fishing. Little signs of any salmon coming in off the tides just lately but the odd fish being caught.
22nd, river is now at summer low, the wind easing off and warmer air has brought good trout surface activity with brook dun, large dark and a few upright's. More smolts now dropping down the river.
26th, the salmon fishing is very slow at present, there are the odd ones creeping in but we need a lift of water levels to encourage the fish in from the estuary. On the up side, the trout fishing is very good despite the cold air due to the large hatches.
26th-30th, the big tides are here which are really backing the river up and spoiling fishing for up to three hours. Did see a few fish show in the Quarry going through Carr Head as the tide was receding on the 27th. The wind direction has now changed to south-south west and the tides will begin to lessen as the week moves on, let us hope that this change will kick start the run of fish.
Just heard of a twenty six pound fish caught from Wetheral on the 28th and a couple lost!
