Prospects & General Comments:
You wait for ages and three come along at the same time....Spates not buses in this case! The first came on Saturday, another on Sunday and there will be another on the way on Wednesday. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, the much needed wash out has happened across all our rivers.

For the WUF teams, these rises bring an end to project work in larger sections of river for the time being, but not before we had completed another fish pass in the upper Usk. Louis's weed team is about to go down the Usk to complete the final search for any giant hogweed that escaped their earlier spraying. They have already boated down from Glasbury to Monmouth on the Wye.

WUF has been invited to join Swansea University and others in two very interesting projects related to invasive species. It's well worth a look here for more information. Details of progress and activity will be posted as the projects progress.

Lagoons

Talk of Swansea reminds us of the proposed tidal lagoon which has already received the initial go ahead but awaits a marine licence from Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Most people know this might be the most expensive electricity ever to be produced if it ever gets off the drawing board and into production. Already there are issues about sourcing the huge amounts of stone required from Cornwall.

The planned structure lies between the Tywi and Wye, Usk and Severn. The first three of these rivers and the Severn estuary itself are EU Special Areas of Conservation for Twaite shad, a much rarer migrant than salmon which must also now be vulnerable. NRW must ensure that proper and exhaustive investigations are concluded that would ensure that there is no possible damage to either species, plus the European eel, sea and river lamprey.

Tidal Lagoon Power (TLP) also need a series of lagoons to make the projects wash their face and attention is turning to the Severn estuary....again. We will bring you more information on this subject soon.
Elsewhere, a well known stretch of the lower Wye is up for sale: Redbrook is double banked and the sale is managed by Knight Frank.

Fishing itself has been varied. Salmon fishing was at a complete standstill until just before the spates came, when four fish came from the Wye. Barbel fishing followed a similar pattern: tricky in the low water, better initially in the higher water and now fishers are waiting for the floods to drop. Trouting has been fair, even good in some places but grayling have definitely topped the bill - all this can be seen in the Anglers' Feedback and Reports.

So assuming the water does drop, whatever fishing you prefer, there are exciting times ahead! Check with the website or office and make the most of it.

All the best from WUF.
