Spey Casting Courses and Season Rods
Tuesday 15th January, 2019
Hopefully, Wye pike anglers will have been making the most of the dry weather and low water levels over the past few weeks.
Pike fishermen are quite a secretive bunch and catch reports are few and far between at this time of year. This is understandable. Their quarry, despite its ferocious looks and nature, is a fish species that is relatively sensitive to angling pressure, especially the highly prized larger specimens.
Unlike last winter, the weather is providing what many would consider to be perfect river conditions for Wye pike fishing. For those that want to know more about how to catch and handle them, Adam Fisher's article in last year's Fishing Passport magazine is a great starting point!
Spey Casting Courses
While pike, chub and grayling anglers continue to brave the elements, salmon and trout fishers' thoughts should now be turning towards the start of the new season, only a few weeks away.
Those wanting to try fly fishing for salmon for the first time (or hone existing skills) might be interested to hear that instructors Illtyd Griffiths and Jonathan Morris will once again be running their extremely popular 2-day Spey casting courses on the upper Wye. These will be held on the weekends of April 27th & 28th and May 4th & 5th 2019. They are a great introduction to the art of fly fishing for salmon or an ideal way of brushing off the cobwebs for intermediate casters.

2019 Fishing Passport Magazine
We are making good progress with the latest edition of the Fishing Passport brochure, due to be published at the beginning of February. This will be again be in digital format, following the positive feedback we received from our first digital magazine last year. We are planning two editions this year. The first focusses predominantly on spring salmon and trout fishing while the second edition will come out in early June concentrating more on the coarse fishing, grayling and upland still waters.
For those that want something to read before then, Oliver Burch's December trout & grayling fishing report can be found here.
Season Rods
Season rods give anglers the chance to secure in advance their fishing for the season. They come in several forms these days, from club memberships, to fixed days per week, to more flexible types that allow you to book into certain fisheries throughout the year free of charge.
Several Wye and Usk fisheries operate them, the details of which can be viewed on the Fishing Passport website.

Finally, many thanks to everyone who took part in the Foundation's fundraising auction in December. Whether you were a bidder or a donor of a lot, we are very grateful for helping us raise just over £10,000 which will go towards our Endowment Fund.
All the best from WUF.
