LOOKING THROUGH WATER (Books and Videos)
lookingbook.jpg Looking Through WaterA novel By Bob Rich. Evocative, emotive, enriching and incredibly thought provoking, maybe could have been called “Looking Through Life” after barely putting this finely written book down, I find it hard for anyone who had the privilege to read this work, not to identify or have an affinity with the finely crafted words, be they fishermen or not, the trials, tribulations and an estranged family life’s journey laid bare, brilliantly intertwined by angling, the un-breakable thread that holds this enchanting story together and the reader on the edge of their seat.My Fathers angling diary, states I was three years, two weeks and four days old when he took me to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, to meet my Grandfather, for my first initiation into the world of angling. Our tackle I remember well, was a tank Ariel, a homemade wooden reel, loaded with old twine and cat gut, with a painted matchstick as a float and chopped worm dug from his garden for bait, no doubt all of his tackle was procured by default from Vicars tank engineering works, where he was employed, before and after the first world war, my Father a veteran of the second world war. Despite only catching small gudgeon and Tommy ruffe, I was hooked and lost to the world of angling for the rest of my life.In later years I was to understand the importance of that first angling experience and many others with my Granddad. He succumbed to the ravages of war, poverty and hard work, he died within weeks, but not before a grandfather and grandson, had created an un-breakable bond, that death could not break. A bond that was not replaced, but re-created and passed on with my Dad, I in turn passed this on to my children and now my grandchild. These experiences, skills, times and precious moments are priceless and timeless.Looking Through Water demonstrates so eloquently, all of the above with so many twists, un-expected turns and more, basically the circle of life, or should it be the circle of angling life?? Angling is proof and testimony, that it mends, heals and brings family and friends together, in the most un-expected circumstances like no other passion or past time and transcends all classes, races, religions and age groups. Bob brings all of these elements together in an exquisitely wonderful and tantalising way.I read and write this book review, on the golden sands of a Caribbean beach, my rod is within reach; I have fished my way around the world and caught most species available, but along this fantastic journey, I have met and made friends with the most amazing people. My children have followed suit, what we have shared was and is life changing for them and for me, the unbreakable bond grows ever stronger, and now my grandson at the age of four joins the fray, the circle is complete, or is it? My sons will I know, create new circles and through the mist of times those circles will intertwine.Looking Through Water has brought for me and no doubt all readers so many memories flooding back, along with future possibility’s that lay ahead. Made me realise that the memories of those first tentative angling steps with my grandfather and that tank Ariel on the canal, are never far from my thoughts and just as important as the memories and adventures my world wide angling adventures have brought me.I implore you if you are going to read one book this year, make it this one, there will be times when you see your reflection and Ohhh all the proceeds are for the benefit of the Veterans, so no excuses go and buy it!Well-done Bob.Andy Nicholson
