A: Many thanks for sending link and after viewing, my personal opinion would be to save your money, use what you would have spent on a wider selection of lures.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Hi Andy, I've recently bought a hook wallet (25cm), it is not obvious how to use it! It folds out, 3 folds, and is marked 15, 20 and 24. It has the words hooks on one side and elastic on the other, but is just not clear how to use. Can you give me some ideas please?
From: June Peacock
A: Hi June,
A tadge difficult to advise when i cant see it, but would asume the envelopes are used to store hooks to nylon or traces the numbers you mention are most likley to be the hooks sizes, but these wallets are multi purpose.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: HI Andy
I have seen a product that is sprayed on bait and lures called "Fool a Fish". apparently It enhances the ultra violet rays and makes the bait stand out more.
Have you heard of this and if so does it work? I dont want to splash out my hard earned on just another gimmick.
Regards Jake
From: Jake Jacobs
A: Hi Jake,
Nope sorry have not heard of this one, send me a link? however does sound like fool a angler! nothing beats good presentation and perseverance!
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: HI Andy
Another question. I have only just found your site.
When I went into "Where to fish" it doesnt mention anywhere in the south east of England. Essex Hertford or Kent. Have we been forgotten?
From: Jake Jacobs
A: Re where to fish insertions, this is where our advertisers place thier adverts and sadly we are waiting for those to come on board from that area.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: HI Andy
I fish the river Lea in essex/hertford and have caught a few eels when corse fishing. Is there a way to target them.I am quite partial to a bit of jellied or smoked eel.
I know you are not allowed to take fish away but do eels count as fish in this respect?
From: JAKE JACOBS
A: To target eels, find a slow deep backwater first, then use, very small deadbaits such as bleak, or gudgeon or minnows and pierce their stomachs and fish ledgered on the bottom, check with local E.A rules as to if you can take them as in some areas they are protected.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Andy please settle a difference of opinion what is the correct way of using back leads thanks Ken
From: Ken
A: This really is a matter of preferance, my way is to place the back lead, between the reel and the first rod eye, but you can if rods are set back on the rest place the back lead on the floor atfer the rod tip, but not as effective.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Hi Andy
I really enjoy wathching the 'Occassional Salmon' video - a classic, apologies for being a little off topic but would you know the name / composer of the classical theme tune to the film please?
Thanks
David
From: David Evans
A: Hi David,
Very many thanks for your kind comments, it was a long time ago now, but think some of the music was belive it or not! Scuhburts Trout Quintet, hope this helps.

Q: I recently bought a lure called a sling jig. I plan to use it off the pier at the ocean. It weighs 2 oz. and what in your opinion would be the best way (and alternative ways) to fish this lure? The salesman said to cast, let it sink to the bottom, then rip it up and let it sink again taking up the slack while it is sinking. I would like your thoughts. Thanks!!
From: Steve Thatcher
A: This lure can be used as a jig lure, especaily of a boat or as you say a pier with deep water, cast and let it hit the bottom then wind a bit then let it drop again, repeat till it reaches the surface can be very effective, or by casting away from you with a method we call sink and draw, basicaly wind again then stop then again repeat this until back to the rod and best of luck.

Q: hello andy can you help me please?
I have got some pebbles and i wish to drill them and put swivels in,to fish a very snaggy section of the local River Severn. Is this possible,as i loose many ledgers and have been advised to do this, but not sure what drill to use
From: alan mckee
A: Hi i would personaly try a masonary drill, ask your local harware store for best option.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: I am going to the coast of South Carolina and plan to do some pier fishing. I am a die hard crankbait person when it comes to bass. What crankbaits would you reccomend to be used from a pier? I am just fishing for anything that wants to bite! What is your opinion of using a Rapala Original Floating Minnow in saltwater? Thanks for your time.
From: Steve Thatcher
A: Rapala Original will work very well as will a lure called waterdog, plus the Shakespear little and big S also have a look at the Luhr Jenson range of lures they have some superb bass lures.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: are barbed hooks illegal to use in uk.
From: paul
A: No barbed hooks are not illegal in the UK, but many independant fisherys and clubs ban the use of them, so best to check when fishing any water in the UK
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: No question-just a statement. I want to thank for not only answering my question, but doing in such a PROMPT way!!! THANK YOU!
From: Steve Thatcher
A: You are very welcome, all part of the service, tight lines.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Is cheese a good carp bait?
Can I use either a drop shot or carolina rig for carp-Which is better??
From: Steve Thatcher
A: Yes cheese is a very good traditional bait which many carp anglers neglect and drop shot would be better.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Andy,
Can you stil supply croc lures etc as when you advertised on videos. I lost the last one recently and am looking for more
From: Pete Wilson
A: Hi Pete,
Sadly am no longer in the tackle trade and no one else in uk supplying them, they are made bu Luhr Jennson and you could by them on line via the Bass Pro shop in the states best of luck.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: what is a waggler, and how is it used
From: peter
A: A waggler is a float that is normally used on still water like lakes and canals and normally has a small bulb shape on the bottom of th float and the line is attached only at the base with 2 pieces of shot and makes is sensative to bites and for coarse fishing,
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: thanks but i meant could you use a feeder rod instead of float rod for float fishing near margins if so which tip would you use viz heaviest? thanks
have a short feeder rod all my wagglers are 13ft
From: jack brisco
A: Yes you can but not ideal and tip size depends on size of fish you after, but if you flaot fishing still use your 13ft and just sit back a little further from the margin.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: can you use a feeder for float fishing near margins if so what tipviz. heaviest?
From: jackbrisco
A: Sort of un-conventional and would have to be a big float to take the weight and if fishing the margins negates it somewhat as you can loose feed next to the float, personaly would use either or.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Hi Andy Thanks for your reply. Are there any other clear water spate rivers in this area I could possibly look to fish? I currently have syndicate fishing on two north east rivers, however I am
always fishing blind for Salmon & really like the idea of targeting individual fish as you demonstrated. I would be prepared to join a syndicate if required. Many Thanks Phil
From: Phil
A: Hi Phil,
Not so sure exactly which area you in the North East covers a big
area and I know the Tyne and Wear has now good runs of Salmon and Seatrout,
but as yet never fished them, my fishing is in the Lake District in Wasdale
on the river Irt and on the river Duddon and Crake and sadly no syndicates
but there are day ticket waters and weekly tickets available on the river
Irt, I do offer a guiding service but obviously on the rivers I fish and
possibly others, if you would like to contact my contact details are as

Q: how do you get the spool off a d.a.m.cte 135 reel
From: Keith Stockton
A: Hi Keith,
Its a bit of a fiddle, first take the cover off, then hold the handle and press down on cover of spool and twist hard clockwise, then still holding the handle, bat it hard with your fingers again clockwise and should spin of so you can access the spool and reverse operation for returning the spool.

Q: Hi Andy
Thanks for the info on Wastwater. The National Trust I believe allows canoes and such on the lake by arrangement and I'm sure I saw somewhere on a website that the canoests were allowed to fish from their craft. I wish I'd made a note of the website but because I'd been trying to find out about fishing the little note stuck in my memory. Incidently the Lingmell Beck seems to dry up in summer but there are pools which contain small fish I've seen them and the river is still flowing below the gravel in between which seemed odd. I have seen a heron fishing in the Mosedale beck, unfortunately he was very camera shy. The Mosedale beck never seems to run dry. I spotted small trout rising in the pool under the bridge at the back of the Wasdale Head Inn beer garden. The guy who runs the WasdaleWeb Website told me that the lake also has the odd rainbow trout though where they came from if true I don't know. I found out from the Ecology and Hydrology Centre at Lancaster that they are reviewing fish stocks this coming year.
Best regards
Bob Ferguson
From: Bob Ferguson
A: Hi Again Bob,
Have never actually spotted fishing from canoes, and not sure what stance the N.T take on this, however words of caution, Wastwater can whip up in an instance from flat calm to high waves and safety first. Re the becks you mention, yes they are spawning areas and it is likely that the fish you have seen are in fact salmon or sea trout Parr, have been present when E.A bailiffs have done electro fishing to identify how many parr and what they are and in all my years have never encountered or seen a rainbow, there are no fish farms within the system, it is un-likley, there is a specie of lake trout that could be mistaken for a rainbow.
The last major fish stocks survey that took place was back in 1964 undertook by Charlotte and Kippling instigated by the fisheries department at Windermere and lead by Fred Buller.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Is there any fish or fishing in Wastwater? I've been facinated by this lake during recent climbing trips to Wasdale. A diver friend says it's virtually empty of fish yet the incoming becks contain small trout I know I've seen them. Diving websites confirm my diver friends info. An old National Trust hand book from the 1970's lists trout, charr, salmon, sea trout plus pike and perch.
From: Bob Ferguson
A: You have asked the right man on this one, I knew this lake like the back of my hand and have been one of the very few anglers to have fished it over the last 30 years, as I own beats on the river Irt, which flows out of Wastwater, I have fished and holidayed in these parts for the last 51 years. Very little is written about Wastwater, fishing wise, if anything and the National Trust who own it openly discourage angling, but cant stop you of the bank, it is free fishing, there is no pike nor perch in the lake, only resident Char that are very small, lake trout, brown trout and Ferrox, I have caught them to 9lbs. Salmon and Sea Trout do run up the river to the lake, then up certain stream running into the lake to spawn, from around late May, but very difficult to catch, as yet due to the clarity of the lake I have failed to catch sea trout, as they are very wary and you need to fish Irish Loch style drift fly fishing from a boat in extremely rough weather. Boats are not allowed to be launched nor used on Wastwater, so you are restricted to the bank. For a period of ten years I was allowed a boat on the Wastwater as an experiment, where I caught many char, Salmon and the various species of trout, but thousands of hours were expended exploring and working it out. For bank fishing a good spot is where the island is near to the road, float fished worm or spinning small mepps and the other good spots are where the various streams enter the lake including the three at the top of the lake and worm fishing ledgered can also work and you can catch some big eels. For a chance of a Salmon you need to fish a copper/brass small 2 inch spoon dulled down along the scree side a long walk and hard going. The lake is far from empty of fish, again due to the clarity divers scare the fish away, best of luck and please let me know how you get on.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Hi Andy thanks for for the reply mate. Got another Q for u. Going fly fishing at loch lubhair do u know any good spots and what flies work well cheers gavin.
From: Gavin hughes
A: Again this loch is fished best from a boat and on the drift and fly’s very much depend on the time of the year early on the duck fly then the may fly turning to stickleback fry flies later on in the year, but as stressed earlier, gaining local knowledge is paramount when either fishing a new method of a new loch. Even if you just talk to other anglers on the bank or getting ready to go out in boats.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hi andy great site mate. I fish at loch earn alot and use swimfeeders with maggot and recently started to use open end feeders. could u suggest any rigs or tips for the above for catching trout. cheers
From: gavin hughes
A: Fishing for Trout on Loch Earne, a very different prospect that coarsew fishing with feeders, trout are preditors and eat flys, one way would be to try spinning from the shore with small mepps, or even float fishing with a worm and they will take a maggot, but by far the best way would be fly fishing from a boat, try and ask in ther local tackle shop and as see if you can tye up with anglers that fish this method on the Loch and am sure will give you some good advice.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hi andy, i am quite new to fishing, my problem is when am feeder fishing on my local pond there is no bite indication on the quiver tip but when i rel in the maggots have been sucked to bits. hope you can help, many thanks
From: rob archer
A: Hi i think your problem can be solved by using the finest quiver tip you can buy and scaling down to finner line, smaller hook and using say a single maggot, with a smaller swimfeeder and make sure that the line is tight with a slight bend in the quiver tip.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: How do you change a spool on aDAM CTE135 its turning but not coming off
From: m muddiman
A: From memory this is a closed faced reel? if so hold the handle and tap the spool hard in opposite direction and then should come free and spin off.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: what is the best sort of line to use for tying hook lengthe.
p.s i pole fish cheers dave
From: dave
A: Obviously depends on the size of fish you are going for, but i prefer clear lines, like stren berkly and dernnan make a good clear line in all the right sizes.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: What are drop offs when used in conjunction with rod-pods
Thanks
From: Dave
A: Drop offs could mean two things the drop off where you cast to where the lake sunndenly gets deeper the shelf, or the indicators that are attached to your rod pod and when you get a bite or a take the indicator drops off the line.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hello there
i have just purchased a shakespeare polestar 204o with top 2 power tops and top 3 match kits.I am not sure how to elasticate the top 3s should i elasticate the 3 sections as telescopic or just the 2 sections and leave the 3rd section as take apart
From: alan mckee
A: I would personally eleasticate top 3 sections and keep as telescopic asnd if you bought from a dealer take it in andam sure they will assist you in getting all the right parts and fitting.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Hello andy, what is your favourite sea trout fly
From: william walker
A: I have several, for varying conditions and times of the year, however my top two are tube flys, that have a silver body wraped with black and a thin black hackle and a single fly, with a gold body wrapped with orange and a hot orange hackle.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: I think i have invented a new spinner(lure).Where or who can i ask for help on the idea i have. What i have in mind should be a hit.
From: Steven Bentham
A: To Patent an invention is really expensive, your best bet would be to approach a lure maker and ask them before showing your lure to sign a confidential agreement to protect yourself. Harris Lure in the UK may be interested but they are suppliers not makers and most makers of lures are from abroad, however it has to be bourne in mind that most ideas and new angling inventions are imediatley copied in India, without any come back and sold cheaply in the Uk and other countries, best of luck.

Q: i am looking at buying a 18ft rod for fishing my local River Severn.I have seen a second hand 4 piece abu ambassadeur elite for saleD o you think this would be suitable for the river where i will be targeting winter roach?
thanks
Alan
From: alan mckee
A: An 18ft rod to me is rather big for roach fishing on the severn and the ABU rod would suggest is not fine enough, be better getting a standard 12ft float rod, which you could pick up from any decent tackle shop for not alot of money and explain to shop dealer fish and area you will be fishing.

Q: What is the current record for arod caught silver Bream. According to the current (1988) list it stands at 15ozs. is this correct?
From: Mike baker
A: The British record for a silver bream just keeps on being smashed at Mill Farm Fishery in Bury, near Pulborough, West Sussex. After standing at 2lb 2oz for years, the record was broken three times in a week during May. First, fireman Phil Morton thought he had beaten the record by 2oz when he landed a 2lb 4oz specimen - only to find his catch had been topped the day before by local angler Doug Plant with a silver which topped the scales at a record-shattering 2lb 11oz.

Q: Hello Andy. I have always used fixed-spool reels, but I am interested in using multipliers for lure and surf casting. However, I am puzzled by the fact that almost all multipliers seem to be right-hand wind. I am right-handed and wind a fixed-spool reel with my left hand, so is there any reason I shouldn't do the same with a multiplier? Many thanks, Mark.
From: Mark Risdon
A: Yes you are right in the main, this is just how multipliers have evolved over the years, especaily for the big game ones, however ABU used to make left hand wind ones and possibly shimano, best to have a search around on the net and ask your local tackle dealer if he can source one for you.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: have been fishing many years using shimano perfection rods 6010 reels great stuff , now just bought biomaster xta 8000 reels as i am going to france what rods should i get to match soz carp fishing .thank,s tosh.

Q: Ay Up Andy! Just read the last question r.e Ribble, maybe worth noting Copper is an effective colour when Settle Water (Peat Stained) is in the Ribble; a local and very effective fly is the Verminator which is copper with a hackled body, everything from tubes, wattingtons pot bellied pits, doubles, trebles, Salars work. I like Copper Alys Shrimp also!

Q: Hi Andy.
I`ve been fishing my local River the River Ribble , just recently(mid July) and the water was heavily peat stained and running at about 1 foot above normal.
Have you any suggestions on what flies to try and the size.
P.S The water temp was in the High 60s.
Many thanks Ian.
From: Ian Reid
A: In heavily peat stained rivers best to step up a few sizes to say 4s and 2s and use bright flys with silver and gold bodys ali shrimp and other shrimp fly patterns, when the water drops go down to wee doubles say size 12s and 14s, best of luck.
From: Andy Nicholson

From: Ian Reid
A: Hi Ian,
Yes is the answer, freind of mine came back with some after fishing them in Iceland, we tried them on the Balckwater Ireland to good affect and have since treid them on the Dovey Wales for sea trout, best fished on rippley glides, not too rough water and the takes are quite spectacular, best of luck and well worth a try on your rivers.

Q: hi Andy
can you tell me the difference
between a baitrunner reel and a freespin reel
From: mick
A: The bait runner reel has a device or switch that once on allows the line to run freely, unlike a normal fixed spool reel, where to allow the line to run freely you have to take the bail arm off, or you maybe refering to a centre pin reel, which is basicaly a drum where the line is held on a simple reel with no bail arm, you just wind.

From: Andy Nicholson

Q: I`ve just bought a pole at a local tackle show, and i was wondering what elastic rating it has. it`s a lineaeffe new starter 8008 roubaisienne. can you help!

From: Andy Nicholson

Q: How many 0.6 weights do I need to use to balance to a 1 Gram weight?

Q:
i have been gifted a shakespeare rod wondered if you can help as to its use?is it for carp fishing/float or what,it has the number 1845on it also has b.25 action written it and the name strike
From: mickb
A: Hi, i know this rod and it is a basic float fishing rod and not really built for big carp, just a general purpose rod.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Andy,I have never used tuna while carp fishing which would you recomend oil or brine? thanks ken
From: Ken
A: Would deffinatly use oil as is more of an attractant to the carp and stays on the bait longer, giving of a great smell.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: thanks andy for your reply.A dollaghan is a rare wild lough neagh trout that can grow up 10lbs and over .We fish at night as sea trout and they will rise to a dry.The average trout is 2lbs but there are some monsters.Feel free to come over to fish for these large brown trout
From: william walker
A: Many thanks for further info on these rare fish and the kind offer to cast a fly for them, one of these fine days, i will try and make it over. Tight Lines.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hello andy, just would like to know anything about dollaghan trout and the flies people use
From: williamwalker
A: Very interesting question of this little known fish, found i belive in the Foyle system nth Ireland and one i would dearly love to fish for, i gather they run the river in August to spawn and from the few i have talked with that have caught them they use and deploy sea trout night fly fishing tactics and flies, as they catch them at night, 2" black and silver tubes and size 8 teal blue and silver, along with brass bodys and hot orange singles, hope this helps.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hello andy, ive got a question about sea trout flies.in your view what is the best fly and why.
From: william walker
A: A very loaded question and dependant on personal choice and importantly what you have confidence in, For night fishing, i like a 2" black and silver tube, tail, with a dropper of hot orange and brass body single, for day time flys wee doubles of the D.A.B and haslam, size 14s, why because i have had the most success with them, after trying many different tyings, but many out there will disagree, all down to fishing them with confidence and presentation.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hi andy
where do the grayling go in the summer months, do the migrate enywhere ? thank you.
From: james henvey
A: The grayling dont migrate, but re-locate during different periods in the year, in the summer months, they tend to spread out looking for food, in the winter months, they tend to shoal up in deeper water, rather than in the streamy water, come end of May June time, they will move to the spawing areas, shallow gravel areas, but not the same places as where the trout spawn, natures way of making sure no over cutting of redds.
The only time Grayling move is down to lack of food and can either go up stream or down river.

Q: hi andy im jusy wondering how the river irt or the esk has been fishing .i fish the river derwent by broughton and had a good salmom season for 2008 having caught 22 salmon and 5 sea trout but all the sea trout were caught out of season i belive there are day tickets avalible for some beats ,it would be good to no what time of year salmon and sea trout run on those rivers, as my favorite fishing is sea trout at night. rivers any advice would be verry greatfull
regards craig
From: craig burns
A: Sound like you have done very well on the Derwent, if you have a look at your E.A return sheet, it gives the figures for the Irt and Esk, the Esk has done better than the Irt, especaily on the sea trout, but has imense fishing presure from the Prince Albert Club, Milom club on the Esk has a small beat where day tickets are available, the seatrout start to run around May and then the mid summer Salmon through to the end of the season best month September. The Sea trout on the Irt, over the last few years has collapsed, very few running and being caught, lots of small herling towards the back end of the year, The salmon, a few mid summer and main runs now, again last two months of the season, not too bad this year, read the Irt reports on this site, again Millom club have water on the tidal regions of the Irt and tickets are available from the garage in Holmrook, but very few night fishing spots, unlike the Esk, hope this informs you as to the picture on both those rivers.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: IS THERE ANY PLACES YOU CAN BIVVY UP AND NIGHT FISH ON LOCH AWE AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A PERMIT
From: HARVEY
A: Yes there is at the top end of the Loch, near to the castle, park in the castle viewing car park and walk down, before you get to the castle on the left, you can bivy and fish there, was there earlier this year and some good pike comming out then.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hello andy iam trying to find the correct method and set up for beachcasting for carp fishing.
From: roy selby
A: You will need a long carp rod minimum 13ft, along with a beach tripd rest to elevate the rod while waiting for a bite, a heavy style lead with the line tight to it while on the rest and then a leader, down to your hook lenght of say 2ft, should do the trick.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Sea Fishing-How do you make sure the hook and line dont get caught up with the float when and after casting.only tried for the firts time yesterday and when I reeled in the bait was wrapped around the top of the float??
From: Nick Heather
A: Simple to solve, you need to ues a sliding float rig and to stop bait wrapping round the float, you need to place a weight about 2ft away from your hook and bait, this will make casting easier and stop tangling.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: what is the largest ferox cought in loch awe, what was its weight and when was it cought.
From: helen
A: The current UK rod caught record stands at. 14.4 kg (31lb 12oz) – a fish from Loch Awe in Argyllshire in 2002
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hi andy ive just bought a pole and would like to know how to attach a rig
From: adrian
A: Really depends if you have a telescopic pole or a take apart, with a take apart, you can buy a stonflow system where the elastic is hidden and located in top section of the pole, and for the tele pole, you can simpley tye the pole elastic to the small eye at the tip, easiest way to rig, is buy ready made rigs from your dealer, dependant on where you are fishing and for what species, then simpley attache to your pole, your dealer will advise you which is best for you.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: are leeda sea fishing rods any good? how do they compare with, say, diawa
From: alan woodhead
A: Very many of these rods come from the same source in China and just re-branded, so the Leeda will compare well and will just be down to proice comparison.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Hi Andy, (love your site)
I have aquired a DAM Quick CTE 135 but am having aproblem getting the spool off to remove the old line and load new can you please tell me how to get the spool off. (The spool cover comes off ok)
Thanks
Regards Jim
From: Jim Mason
A: Many thanks for your kind words, sorry but not familiar with that reel, would be best to contact the main supplier direct for help, however if it is thre closed faced reel i think it is, you have to hold it tight and batt with plam of hand the spool anti clockwise and should come of.
Best of luck.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: when is course fishing (not pike)permitted at llandegford res. S.Wales? Do you have a contact number /e-mail address for the venue?

From: Andy Nicholson

Q: when talking about seat boxes what are the winders or winder trays and what function do they perform
thanks
From: mickb
A: Winders are normally for ready made float rigs and pole float rigs and the winder trays that fit into the seat box is to keep them all neat and tidy. You can buy the ready made float rigs from your local tackle shop or make them your self, buty just buying the winders, line, hooks and shot.

Q: Hi Andy.
Great site, just found it and have learned so much in the past few days reading most of the Q & A's top marks i think !
Anyway...Can you please tell me if Keenets has gone bust or not as i don't seem to get any reply from the address and phone number i have for them.
I have one of their K-Class Globetrotter carp rod 2.75tc and would like another one.I was wondering, if anyone reading this questions has one and would like to sell it, if they could contact yourself and you could pass on my or their detals, it all helps right !
Thanks again.
all the best.
Barry.
From: Barry Ryan
A: Very many thanks for your kind comments, Keenets has not gone bust but bought out by the Sharpes group, contacted on 0800 032 8172 or info@sharpesgroup.com and hope you find another rod.

Q: how do i get my line to sink when float fishing tried wash liquid thanks
From: mick
A: No problem, go to a shop that sells fly fishing tackle and ask for a pad that greases your line with either a sinking agent or floating, or you can buy a tub of just sinker.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Andy, I have only just stumbled across your Q&A site because I wanted to ask an expert about a fish I caught recently in a lake somewhere on the cambridgeshire fens.
I was fishing for carp using balled method with boilie and sweetcorn hook bait. i caught what immediately felt like bream and I will now describe it. It was 12" deep and 18" long and had no slime and the scales felt rough and it was silver (not white) and because I'm a beginner, I though it must be a silver bream, not realising that they are tiny fish usually confused with skimmers. Any ideas as to what I might have caught?
Thanks in anticipation
jules
From: julien ellis
A: A tadge difficult without seing a photo, however i belive this to be a hybred a cross between a roach and a bream, quite common, hope this helps.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: i would like to know how to fix floating crust to the hook
From: pete
A: Very simple, buy fresh crusty bread and use the outer crust area of the bread, pierce the hook through the bread into the crust part and then back again so the point sticks out, then gently cast out.
Should do the trick.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: HI ANDY THAHKS FOR THE UPDATE ON CONISTON,CHARR. DO YOU KNOW THE OWNERS OF GREYRIGG TARN,I USED TO FISH THERE WITH MY FATHER,YEARS AGO ,AND ALL THE TARNS AREOUND KENDAL YOURS DON
From: DON KIRKMAN
A: Have made some enquiries about Greyrigg Tarn and most people haven't even heard of it and those that have don't know anything about it, so can only assume that it is privately owned.
Sorry on this occasion I cannot help you.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: What combinations and flavours are best used for the Vaal Dam (Cilliers) if possible.
From: Wayne Hiscock
A: Sorry but am not familiar with this fishery or water, nor can find any info on it other than trying contacts through this link http://www.essentialtravelinfo.com/accommodation/fishing/southern_africa/south_africa/free_state/vaal_dam/index.html
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hi again andy, just started charr fishing again after a 8 year lay off (had a stroke)got electric motor, tried coniston to no avail, not even one ring, talking to locals who said not even trevor fishes for the charr, says the lake is dead, can you find any info on this,or maybe sell my gear . DON
From: DON KIRKMAN
A: Have made enquiries and Charr still being caught, but not many anglers fishing nowadays, they will not have gone and still catching them on Windermere, best month is May, would suggest electric motor might not be presenting baits as well as rowing action, try alternating speed and cutting engine of to replicate the way the boat moves while rowing.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: can you tell me what to put on the end of whip rod just got a new one
From: ANITA FEARN
A: Two ways you can sort this out, first is to buy some pole elastic and use the connectors then tie on your pole rig, which you can also buy from your dealer, complete with hook and floats already weighted, or simpley tie stright to whip, which should have a loop on the tip, your rig directly.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hi andy can u tell me anything about the new exploding swimfeeders and where i can buy them thanks eric
From: eric
A: Try this company http://www.aquamania.co.uk they should be able to help.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: I would like to make my own bouncing betty weights, but cannot find anywhere I can buy the lead weight moulds from.
Can you direct me to a retailer?
From: Stephen Egerton
A: As these weights are made out of moulded rubber, it is quite a complicated engineering task and are not created in lead moulds but mass made in metal injection moulds, it would be far easier and cheaper to buy them from Luhr Jennson, or from the Bass Pro shop, i dont know of any stockist in the Uk.

Q: Can I have the email address for Shimano U.K.

From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hi please could you tell me the best bait (new or old) and best tactics for catching barbel on the river severn around ironbridge? many thanks
From: richard
A: I have found the best method and bait is to touch leger with sweetcorn with an open end feeder full of corn, exciting way of catching them, other is by laying on with flavoured meat, sausage section or meat balls, am not an advocate of the new fangled method of high protein bolies for barbel and heavy baiting, but they do work.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: andy could please tell me what a
back lead is iknow its a weight but what exactly is its purpose
From: mick blissett
A: The back lead is used for drop back takes, when the fish has taken the bait and does not move away, but goes towards the lead, this helps with hooking.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: i have a 2.5ssg float how much shot should i use on this as i am learning many thanks
From: catherine
A: When you buy shot, either assorted or single tubs they are size marked and if the float has the marking of what shot size and how many, equally space out the ammount of shot the float states, if not gues what shot is required, if the float sinks, too many if it lays flat, not enough, you need the float to stick out of the water about half an inch.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Andy Some weeks ago I asked you about how to get the fish feeding in a pond that has not been fished for years thanks a million for your answer I am now having a great time carp up to 28lb keep up the good work Ken.
From: Ken Brackenbury
A: Delighted to be of help, long may your good fishing continue and dont forget this time of year floating baits work well, dog biscuits and floating crust, many thanks for your kind comments.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: hi i have just bought a match pro 4m margin telewhip pole from argos it doesnt have anywhere to connect to anyone no how to connect the rig to the pole
From: Jean-paul
A: This is one of the problems when buying through these stores, you dont get the back up and advice as you would from a tackle shop, basicaly you need to go to a tackle shop, to buy the connectors and pole elastic and they will advise how to fit.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: What fish are in the Towy is it the Ali shad or the Twait Shad ?
From: David Makings
A: Both of the Shad run the river, also resident Brown Trout can be caught along with the odd big Pike in slower reaches and of course the runs of Salmon and Sea Trout
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: would you know how to open a fishery in the costa del sol area?
From: nicky matthews

Q: hi i have just brought a 5 metremargin telewhip. i have never used one before.do i just tie my rig onto the ring of the pole at the end. or do i have to use other tackle.
From: paul turner
A: You can do that, but would suggest best to tie a lenght of pole elastic to ring first and then tie your rig to elastic and you can buy connectors from any good shop for both line and to connect to ring at end of pole.

Q: Hi Andy, I have just got some bouncing betty bait controllers from a friend. Could you please tell me the best way to use them. I fish on the river Girvan in Ayrshire for salmon and sea trout. Thank you.com
From: John Wason
A: Simple rig in way you would a rolling weight from hook to a swivel the rod side of swivel a bead then the boucing betty, cast slightly up-stream, hold the rod high and feel it down the run or pool, obviously have to gauge current to sizer of weight, i did a visual demo on The Enegmatic Sea trout Video and can be purchased from Beckmann Visual Publishing.

Q: can you please advise on pva bags
how to make them up at home before fishing and how to fish with them ie how to fix to line do you need a ledger etc
thanks
alan
From: alan mckee
A: Because PVA disolves in water and in damp conditions, it is best to fill them and prepare on the bankside, if you are using the bags you will be ledgering and the best way is to tie them around your hook bait, so your hook bait will lay with the loose feed in the bags, simple as that.

Q: pls give me the traditional method of drying and smoking fish in africa and ashia country.thanks.reply
From: kingsley
A: The old traditional way is very simple, by hanging the fillets to first dry on a line or twigs, then lighting a smoldering fire of any sort of hard wood chips, or shavings, sometimes pine and letting the smoke waft over the fillets for quite some time often a day or so, the longer the stronger the flavour.com

From: Georgia
A: Really is a case of how long a piece of string! so many methods, types of fishing and species you might be fishing for!? best to go back to store you bought your pole from and ask for advice, explain where and what you will be fishing for, buy some basic books and try joining an angling club, where you will gain some good advice and help.

Q: Dear Andy
Many thanks for the hours of pleasure I have had watching the enigmatic sea trout & occasional salmon.
I fish the River Towy and would be very grateful if you could advise what the best fly and means of presentation would be for day time fly fishing for sea trout in high water.
Cheers
Davecom/b.
From: David Evans
A: Hi David,
Very many thanks for your kind comments, day time fly fishing can be terrific and best to think small flys, wee doubles, size 14s and 16s use a dropper and best fished on a dropping river, but still with colour in it and use an intermediate line, we use this method on the Dovey to great affect, fished just one day on the Towey last year beat two on Golden Grove and between 6pm and 9pm, took 11 sea trout between 11lb and 4lb on this method and an hour before had a 17lb plus salmon, flies like haslam work well, plus small black and silver flys tied on silver hooks, best of luck.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: the carp in the pond are common and mirror a 14lb common is the best so far do you still recomend bloodworm ? Thanksc
From: Ken
A: Nope would suggest then as mentioned that you need to educate them, over a period of time, keep feeding a bed of hemp along with your chosen hook bait, such as corn, pelletts and even boiles and in the summer time introduce floates such a crust and dog biscuits.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Hi Andy I have been given the sole use of a small to medium carp lake there is quite a good head of fish but I only catch 1 or 2 in a day ,it is surounded by woods what am I doing wrong or will there be to much natural food in the water there is also a small head of roach and bream. looking forward to your replycom
From: Ken
A: They could be Crucians if so very difficult to fish if not fished regulary in the past, try blood worm and keep feeding, corn also a good bait, it is a matter of edcuating them and other species, just a matter of experimenting.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Are barbed hooks illegal in the uk?ript>http:/

Q: Dear Mr Nicholson
My name is Helen Bennett and I am a third year geography student at the University of Hull. I am currently undertaking my third year dissertation. The title of this dissertation is "Conflicts surrounding the rights of access on Welsh Rivers between different leisure groups and landowners".
I am a keen white water kayaker which is why I have an interest in this chosen subject. I am trying to get an overall opinion from both the leisure groups of anglers and kayakers in Wales and equally from riparian land owners.
For my research it would be very beneficial for me to interview people from all sides of the access debate. Would be possible for you to put me into contact with some Welsh anglers, prominant in the access debate so that I could get some opinions on the problems of access from the viewpoint of anglers?
My only problem is that I am on the other side of the country in Hull and due to timetabling and third year ties the logistics and timing of a trip to talk to you in person would be very difficult. Therefore if you were able to allow me to interview you, would it be possible to conduct it over the phone. This interview would be recorded, only for the purpose of transcribing the conversation. The recording would then be deleted.
I am contactable through this email address or on 07522-948-119.
Regards,
Helen Bennett

First pay the line out through the rod, along the grass, then wind back through grass with putting tension with finger and thumb back onto reel, best way of loading line on reel, is get a freind to hold spool under tension and again place tension yourself in same way when winding on to reel, this should elveiate the twist, but every so often run it through the grass to take twist out.com/b.js

Q: hi andy, can a carp rod & reel be used for pike fishing?
ta stephenhttp://www.adw95.com
From: stephen
A: Hi Stephen,
Really depends on the test curve of the rod and if you are casting heavy dead and live baits out, if that is the case, you need a rod that is at least 2.5lb test curve and as for your reel, as long as it hold at least 150yds of say 15lb mono, should be ok, free spool reels best for pike fishing.http://www.ba

ta stephenhttp://www.adw95.com/b.
From: stephen
A: Hi Stephen,
Carp at this time of the year tend to be very dormant and shoal up in the deeper water, when fishing, best to find deepest water and bait up 4or 5 swims and stick to those, they will move around and then stay on that loose feed, worm is good at this time of the year also.com/b.js>

Alawys very difficult to control and police fishing from afar, you will be far better of leasing to a very resonsible syndiycate or good angling club, giving then clear resonsibility for the up-keep and saftey of anglers and all livestock, in the field, draw up a clear contract of all their resoponsibilitys and make sure farmer is also aware of them and could ask him to keep you informed of any problems and breaches of contract.c

we are going on a canal in a weeks time - last time went we did a some fishing bearing in mind we travelled through various counties. We got stopped by one bailif and he threatened to come onto our boat and take all of our gear from us as we never had permits - we all had rod licences but where do we get permits from to fish as we did not fish in just one spot all week we were on holiday? As you can understand you do not stay still all week on a canal boat! - what permits, licences do we need to be able to fish the canal "legally" and can we fish from our boats if we want to . Look forward to your speedy reply.

From: terry gray
A: Hi Terry,
Very much dependant on what baits are allowed on the beats that you fish and obviously shrimp and worm, along with the flying C works well at this time of the year, always best to chat to the locals and tackle shops in the area and re tackle, would recomend a good bait runner type reel, Okhuma make some really good ones and a great deal cheaper than Shimano, but they are good reels and go for a 11ft rod with a test curve of around 1&1/4lb this will set you up well.

From: Padraic
A: Hi Padraic,
Things are fine thanks, did have a few days on Corrib, early this month, but mayfly not up a few small trout. With regard to flies, really best at that time of year to chat to ghilies and shop owners, to see what they are taking when you arrive, could be perch fry, or several different combinations, always best to check locally and your team of three flies, always best to use a bob fly on top dropper and then equally spaced out to tail fly, but cast no longer than your rod and best of luck.http://www.bann

There are very many in-expensive Carp rods on the market, one of the secrets of being able to make long casts, is not in the rod, but in the reel, make sure you have a fixed spool reel that has conical shaped spool, with line that is ballanced to to rod and reel, this will help with long casts, best of luck.http://ww

Very little info is comming out of that area, formdefinate Salmon are now running the river Wharfe, but mainley in Feb nad March, odds on the Salmon and Sea Trout are running the river Ure, but many anglers and clubs keep it a closley gaurded secret as it would push up river rent prices. The walking sticks can be bought from Fawcetts of Lancaster, the bouncing betties, you will have to buy direct from Luhr Jenson in the USA, they have a web site.
Just got back from the river Irt only managed a few hours fishing but got a 6lb Salmon and a 3lb Sea Trout.

THANKShtt
From: Stephen
A: Hi Stephen,
Basically a waggler rod is for float fishing, using a waggler float, but not exclusivley, a feeder rod, is what it says for use while using a swim feeder, fishing on the bottom, if you want to buy either of these rods a good tackle shop will advise you accordingly.

In some regions of Spain, you actually don't need to have a licence, only permission to fish the water you are intending to do so, it would be best to check once you are there and i gather if needed they are freely available.

Q: Question:
A pool I fish above the junction of the Mawdach & Wnion was holding a number of good sewin in the 3-6lb range. They had come in off the tide and been in situ for about a week or so, I guess waiting for water to run. Although the pool is about 10ft deep there is very little pull on the water. However the fish were active showing every half hour or so. What is the best way to present a worm in these conditions i.e keeping it on the move.

If you are just starting of sea beach fishing, it would be best to start with a Fixed spool reel, easier to start with when casting then progress to a multiplier.

Very difficult to repair brocken sections, you could try smearing with super glue, over cracked area, but it will always be a weak area, or for a more proffesional job take it to your local shop where purchased, they normally do repairs and might be able to put a carbon sleeve over offending area, if not they will quote you for a new section.co

Do you know of any Grayling rivers

Also this may seem a daft question
but can you use a centerpin reel on
stillwaters? I fancy going back to course fishing and have some lovely ponds near me and i'm also a bit of a traditionalist (waterlog reader) and would love to invest in one! Also what kind of all round rod, (river & lake), would you suggest aswell?
Phew thats all!

Best bet to contact Test Valley angling club on 01703 86068 they will have loads of info in that area, also call at the tackle shop in Stocksbridge, they have contacts to fishing on the Bourne a tributary of the Test, good grayling fishing.
Re a centre pin reel, when skilful with practice you can use this reel for any sort of fishing, in fact, for the first few years of my fishing that is the only reel I had, even for spinning. Greys of Alnwick make a superb one.
Re a rod for all round fishing, I use one of my own which is the Andy Nicholson Shrimping and Worming rod, 11.5ft, made again by Greys, if not in stock try Fawcets of Lancaster, basically it is about 1.25lb test curve, so light lines up to 4lb can be used, that is the sort of rod you are looking for, so Pheww think that covers all and best of luck.

A: Hi John,
The Dylon dye would be the best, but you also have to use a preservative and can be very time consuming and so easy so get it wrong. My advice to you, would be to buy the localy prepared ones, from any number of shops either in Foxford or Ballina, they have perfected the right color and type of shrimp for fishing on the Moy and they are relativley in-expensive, this is waht most of us do, use what the locals do for best results.com/b.js>

Q: What are the legallities of fishing for salmon and sea trout off the beach or in the river estuary in england. I know you are required to have a rod licence but do you need a permit of any kind.
From: keith king
A: Hi Keith,
Effectivley if you are fishing in the sea, you do not need a rod licence, for rod and line fishing for any specie including salmon and sea trout, you only need a permit for netting.
The river estuary, can be a grey area, but normally up-tide to where the river actually becomes truly tidal water, if it is under ownership or control it is normally signed, but best to always check, for local by-laws check out the E.A site.

I have a Browning Super Club Waggler 12 ft match rod. Please could you give me some idea of roughly what size of fish i can expect to land safely on a rod of this type? i.e Would it be safe to land a 20lb+ carp on this type of rod.
Many thanks,
Petecom/b.j
From: Pete
A: Hi Pete,
It is feasable to land a fish of that size on your rod, given enough time and the right circumstances, however not advisable, as you would have to play the fish for an innordinate long lenght of time and not really fair on the fish and it could also smash the rod and line if you excerted too much pressure.
If fishing for large fish such as this, far better to use the right equipment, in way of a specialised carp rod at least two pound test curve, with at least 10lb line.

Q: What is the best bait for catching roach.can you use dried crackers to
attract fish.
h
From: Daniel
A: Hi Daniel,
Good baits for catching roach are maggot and bread flake,
crunched up crackers am sure will also attract the roach as loose feed as
long as they are soaked and fall to the bottom where the roach are feeding,
but using loose feed such a maggot, bread, crumb and bread flake also work
well, secret is to feed little and often.com/b.js>

From: vinny t
A: Hi Vinny,
For Pike fly fishing you will need at least a 10ft rated8-9 fly rod, with same rated sink tip fly line and a good thick nylon leader, there are loads of good pike flys available now in the shops.
Your rod for Cat Fish seems ok, you will need at least 15lb mono on a free spool and adopt pike fishing techniques, always best to use a thin wire trace, they have sharp teeth, even when fishing worm, always scent them, have a look at our links pages there are cat fishing sites, with loads of rigs on them.
Also if you are interested i run Pike fly fishing course in Ireland, details in our members pages and best of luck.

Q: Hi Andy,
I am new to fishing and would like to know if i need to attach a hooklength when stickfloat/waggler fishing, or if i should just attach the hook to the mainline? If so, what is the best way to attach a hooklength and when is the hooklength required.
Many thanks
http://www
From: Pete
A: Hi Pete,
It is preferable to use a hook length, rather than tying direct on to main line, this means you can use a slightly stonger main line and don't have to fiddle around tying loose spade end hooks on till you get used to it. Hooks to nylon are the best, which have a loop, so a simple half blood knot will be more than adequate.

Q: dear andy, i have chronic progressive multiple sclerosis and am (was) an avid fisherman. I can hold a rod but have a serious problem of not being able to reel in what i hook. is there a powered cranking reel out there that won't cost an arm and a leg to buy and works well. i have a very limited and fixed income with huge medical costs to boot. what can you suggest?
sincerely, randy walters
From: randy walters
A: Dear Randy,
So very sorry to hear of your condition and well done in keeping fishing, however i am struggling to find of a powered reel, there used to be a mulitplier made by Diawa and a battery operated fly reel by DAM, but not so sure they are still being made, your best bet would be to contact the major suppliers and pose the question, only other suggestion i can make is to buy a fixed spool reeel that has the highest retrive rate with ball bearings, that should help and best of luck.com/b.j

Do you know where I can buy or have built a long (14 to 15 ft) trotting rod for barble with plenty of beef. The rod I use at present is 14ft 6inches and was built for me by Andy Orme and although it's a great rod I have found a swim with good doubles and a snag which has to be avoided on the first run! Is Andy still in business or can you recommend another rod builder.

This is a very good beach caster and the reel will suit it well, what you need is a little practical help and demonstration, first read the instruction for the reel on usage and practice on a field, and make sure that the overrun nob is set correctly, but your best bet would be to find a helpful fellow angler and watch and learn from them, most anglers will lend a helping hand.com/b.

Q: Hi I have recently fancied the idea of fishing for barble and chub on the river Wye with a centre pin reel (i want to see what all the fuss is about ).As I am on a budget to purchase a centre pin reel I have the choice of two one being a classic speedia wide drum centre pin, the other is a very attractive looking adcock stanton 4.75 inch ball raced model. Could you recomend one of these reels as I am A complete novice thankyou.http://
From: dean jenkins
A: Hi Dean,
There is great fishing on the Wye for barbel, especialy around Brewerdine, on waters owned by the Red Lion Hotel, re your centre pin reel you should buy, i personally would go for the adcock with the ball bearings.
Fishing with a cantre pin reel especaily trotting a float is the most wonderful way of fishing and controling a float and bait a very direct way of fishing, enjoy and best of luck.

Q: can you tell me how to set up a dead bait rig using sunk floats.many thanks.http://www.a
From: terry oneill
A: Hi Terry,
There are several ways, this is the nost popular way, the purpose being is to try and suspend a bait just of the bottom, making it more visable and attractive, working down from the rod, you need to have an arsley bomb on a running link, then a stop and swivel, with a stout leader, attched to that place the running submerged float, marvic and middy do good ones, then another stop and swivel and then attach wire trace with hooks, another trick to get the bait more bouyant is to place in the dead bait a wooden stick adding extra bouyancy, you can also use a paternoster as well, hope this helps.http://www.banne

Q: Dear Andy, My daughter and I have been carp fishing for a while now using cat food as hook bait. Recently, a local fisheries bailif has told us that they intend to ban the use of cat food as it can be harmful to fish. Can you confirm this or enlighten us please.
Regards
Davehttp://w
From: Dave Williams
A: Hi Dave,
I think banning the cat food bait as a hook bait is very over the top and have had no scientific reports to suggest that it is harmfull to fish, i personally can't see it being any more harmful than other prepared baits, like lunceon meat etc, but what they maybe worried about is that too much thrown in as loose feed can be bad for any fisherie, in the same way as overfeeding with boilies, this just might be the case.

There are several spots on the Wharfe where you can buy day tickets, the best two one at Boston Spa, tickets from tackle shop, the other at Whetherby again from tackle shop and another one to consider is at Pool in Wharfedale, tickets from Esso garage, would also be worth considering buying a season ticket with Bradford No one angling club or Leeds AA both have excellent fishing on the Wharfe, you will get details from local tackle shops.com/b.

The sort of tackle will be six foot boat rods around the 30lb to 50lb class variaty with a mulitpier reel loaded with either 30lb or 50lb line, normally using squid type baits and the fish caught around the waters near Whitby are cod, pollack and Link fishing near wrecks.

From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Hi Andy,
as you know I am still learning things,
and have just moved to live on a marina
where the bream and roach are superb.
Can you tell me at what time of the year
bream are likely to start slowing down and
become harder to catch and is it true that
they are predominantly night feeders. Also
what will be the best bait to use once they start
to slow, I have been using corn during the summer
with superb results.
Roy.
From: Roy Fawcett
A: With the Bream fishing as the weather gets colder, corn is still a good bait, but the shoals of fish at this time of year and as the autum progress to winter, move around a great deal less, so locating the shoals becomes harder, another good bait for the bream at this time of the year is worm tipped with caster, well worth a go and more of a natural bait, so best of luck with your winter bream and raoch fishing.com

From: Kev Elliott
A: Hi Kev,
Am nost so sure about the Law here, think it will be a bit of a grey area, gambling for anyone under the age of 16 is iligal, including the lotery, but all these are official and if your pool is just between mates on an informal basis, then i can't see the harm, but that is my opinion and maybe not strictly what the law determines, think really you should take the overall opinion of the club and if they deem it to be ok as a freindly wager amongst friends, then ok and best of luck.com/b.js>

Q: why is it that there are so many do gooders are always complaining about shrimp fishing for salmon. My view is that everyone to his own liking be it bait spinning or fly whats your view andy
From: tony
A: Hi Tony,
My view has always been that Shrimp, worm, spinning is a very legitimate way of catching Salmon, however it is not a view that is held by many, who feel that methods other than the fly should be outlawed, what they fail to recognise is that it is not fly fishing, what they are fishing with either represents a food source at sea, or is an attractant, basically like a lure, so it is lure fishing with a fly rod, not fly fishing in the true sense of the meaning and by banning other methods is way of restricting catches and this just is not the case.
However I have always respected individual fishery rule or local fishery authorities, which we must always abide by, it is worth noting that rivers like the Tay, who did ban the shrimp are now looking to reinstate this method, due to a fall in catches and this damages the value of their fishing, all about money here.
What the emphasis I feel should be on and we should take a leave out of the Irish book is to what ever method we use there should be a restriction on the number of fish killed i.e. in Ireland they have a tag system and you are allowed to take two Salmon only in one day and a maximum of 22 in any one season, this gives the right message to all especially when we are trying desperately to stop estuary and drift nets licences being issued.http

From: Steve Watson
A: Hi Steve,
Blimey i really don't know where you can buy maggots, over the golden pond, it might be worth getting hold of some one in the American Manufacturers Association and ask if any of their shops sell them.
Re producing your own, smelly messy buissness, hope you have a tolerant wife, you need rotting meat, a tray, about 3ft by 3ft and 6 inches deep and place a fine wire mesh over the tray. Place the meat or fish meal on the wire mesh, the flys will lay their eggs in the meat, feed eventually of the meat and when too big will fall through wire mesh into the tray below.
But you must find a place where, animals, birds and kids can't get at it and far enough away from the house, due to the smell, have witnessed, many a divorce over home made maggot production and the very best of luck.com/b

Q: When feeder fishing with braid what sort of set up would you use ?
i.e what knots, plus rig set up ?com/b.js>

I presume you are using braid as a main line, i would use a sliding feeder and then connect the braid to a swivel, using either a grinner knot or a full blood knot, then connect to your swivel, your chosen hook length and keep it simple.

Q: what type of spinner do you use for catching brown trout?r

Many spinners will do well for trout, my favorite are the Mepps type, sizes 1 and 2, small spoons work well too, perch fry patterns and the Tazmanian Devil is a really good one to have a go with best of luck.ript>http://www.adw9

Q: hi andy,
I know that to get the best out of your fly rod you should stick with the aftm rating stated on the rod. But is it alright in your opinion to use a rating which is one either side of that recommended?
david hansenhttp://www.ban
From: davidhansen
A: Hi David, it is always best to stick to the rating on your rod to get the best out of it, however if you do go either side, going lower will mean you won't cast as far and going up means you run the risk of overloading the rod, which can then break, hope this helps.http://www.adw95.com/b

Q: i am going to try to start fishing with a bubble float.can you tell me the best way to tie the bubble to line and hook length thank youhtt
From: rogsivier
A: Hi, the best way is to tie the bubble float at the end of the line and equally spread the flies out, useually to the lenght of the rod you are using, often you can tie 4 flys on in the same way with droppers as a traditional cast, then slowly retreive.

Q: About 12 months ago I had a pond dug measuring about 50m by 20m. The pond is fed by some spring water and water that drains from the surrounding higher ground. It has been suggested that I stock it with grass carp. I prefer fly fishing. Do you think grass carp would be a good bet or would you have another suggestion? Thanks in advance for your help.com/b.js>
From: David Willcox
A: Hi David,
The pond sounds ideal for keeping fish, however Grass Carp are notoriously bad at being kept alive and if you have plant life like lily’s and various other pond plants, they do tend to eat them, with you preferring fly fishing, it might be an idea to investigate putting trout in there, but would first suggest you have the water tested for oxygen levels and the Ph of the water and please make sure that when you do have fish introduced to the water, that the supplier has all the requisite licences to do so.htt

Q: I have just started fishing at the ripe age of 45 after having a some what quiet summer I was wondering if there are any different tactics for winter fishing I fish on a few large pools in the Crewe & middlewitch area which have some large carp 30lbs and I would like to catch some of there smaller brothers or if luck as it the bigger ones thanks for any info
Ian Forresterhttp://www.b
From: Ian Forrester
A: Winter fishing can be hit and miss, especialy for Carp, they tend to be down deep, and don't move about a great deal and they tend to shoal up, so it is vital to find where the shoals are, local knowledge will help. The usual baits of sweet corn and flavoured meat work well, including the bolies and put more ground bait in than normal.

many thanks Steve
From: brian veitch
A: Hi Brian,
This is a big Loch to fish on, Toby type spoons and the Mepps type spinners always work well, am not sure if you are fishing from bank or boat, but if from boat, then trolling would be the best and in this way you can experiment with many types of lures especially Rappala’s floating and sinking and would advise once there call in at the local tackle shop for advice and best of luck.com/b.js
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: i am going coarse fishing for the first time tomorrow do you have any tips to catch some decent carp
From: raymond noble
A: Hi Raymond,
Very much depends on the weather, if it is a nice warm and sunny day, you could find the carp cruising on the surface and floating baits like chum mixers and floating crusts could work well, carp tend to be in the margins, so as an alternative and if weather cooler try sweet corn or luncheon meat, these baits tend to sort the bigger ones out and best of luck.

From: grant cooke
A: Hi Grant,
Congratulations in catching such a big-un, in reality it would be nice to set your sights on this size and bigger, but the bigger they get the harder they get to catch and that scenario always ends in disappointment. The best way is to enjoy your fishing aim high but don’t discount the smaller ones and best of luck.

Q: what is the best colour of fly to fish in murky water as all the rain we have had the waters dirty
From: colin tomlinson
A:
Hi Colin,
Depends what fish you are after, but if it is Salmon then choose the flies that have a great deal of sparkle built into the bodies, or if trout go for ones that have luminous tyings like hot orange fluorescent green. You can even get little beta lights that constantly glow, that can be tied into a fly, hope this helps.
From: Andy Nicholson

Q: Could you please tell me the best way to prepare trout pellets for use
Many thankshtt
From: John Arnold
A: Hi John,
There are many ways of preparing trout pellets and very much dependant on what you are going to use them for and for which species, there are floating and sinking pellets, the floaters used just as they come to attract fish like carp on the surface into the swim you are fishing in. The sinkers can be soaked prior to fishing in an attractant, then used as a form of ground bait, this is the most common way of preparing them, or they can be used just as they are, for ground baiting. Hope this helps.http://www.ban

From: pat
A: Hi Pat,
With regard to the line, it does come down a great deal to a matter of choice and cost, in relation to the style of fishing you do, you might consider using these new breed of braided lines, that have longevity and fine diameters, they are very good for spinning and using Rapala’s and can also be used for worm fishing as long as you use a mono trace to the hook or lure, however they are expensive a good brand is the firebraid by Diawa. Other good lines are Berkly and Stren both have a good selection of mono lines, for low water and clear conditions a clear line is the best, hope this helps.co

Q: Hi, Can you give me the tradditional "recipe" for tying a Stoats Tail Fly. Thank You.htt
From: Bob Waters
A: Hi Bob,
The Stoat Tail is usually dressed in two forms a silver body or a black stoat tail which has a black floss body almost every dresser has his own version of this pattern, this one is mine and needs little introduction it was originally dressed with a wing of stoat tail fibres but squirrel tail fibres are more generally used as they have a much higher gloss and this tying is for a tube fly in silver.
The dressing silk, black, body flat silver tinsel, rib fine or medium round silver tinsel, depending on the size of the tube, wing black dyed squirrel or natural stoat tail fibres, head black. Hope that this is of some use.

Q: Some one wrote to you asking if it was ok to varnish a rod.
Why would they want to do that.
What benefit is there?.
If you have varnished it. through time with bumps and knocks water will get it in and ultimately rot the cork.
If rod manufactures thought there was any merit in varnishing ,dont you think they would have done it by now ?
From: ashley
A: Mmmm not quite so sure that this is an angling question, nor that I can stretch it out to two para’s if my knowledge of Shakespeare serves me correct, she never got to go fishing and was obviously at this point, fighting her conscience and her feminine side as whether or not to take up this gentle pastime and after taking extensive advise from Isaac Walton, decided the time was not quite right for her, under the present climate, a decision she was later to regret.

Q: I find that the toby is one of the most
effective lures on my local river,
but a lot of fish manage to shake this
lure off with just a few jumps.
Can you tell me why this is? and how
I can improve it's hooking action.
http://www.b
From: Anthony Carr
A: Hi Anthony,
This is a classic problem when fishing the Toby, i always reckon in catching one fish out of four takes, there are two problems when fishing the Toby, one can be resolved by adding another split ring where the treble is attached, this extends the hook further out and increases the hooking, the other problem is the fins on the tail of the Toby, as the fishes mouth closes over the fins and as you strike it tends to force the fishes mouth open, so they are poorly hooked, you can round the fins of with a file to lessen this affect or use other spoons without fins, but always with these types of spoons add the extra split ring and this will help, by doing this you should increase your hook up rate and the best of luck.com/b.js>

From: Jim
A: Hi Jim,
Yes you can catch trout in deep lakes using the lures you suggest, these big trout are normally called Ferox and they are preditors that feed on other fish, the fish you will normally find deep, it would be best to use a fish finder depth sounder, to locate the fish and the drop off's, fishing with the rod, reel and strong line would be best.com/b.

A: Hi Stuart,
Re the river Wye there is a great deal of day ticket water available on this river, one of the best stretches i know is The Red Lion Hotel water at Bredwerdine near Hereford, you will get their number from directory enquireys, the other contact that will be helpful to you is the book Where to Fish published by Thomas Harmsworh, you will be able to order this book from any Smiths, this book has info on all rivers in the UK, and the best of luck.http://www.bann

(i am a student) i wonder, if i could catch perches and big chubs by loure fishing. Can you inform me? (i dont care whether your answer is about lakes or rivers)
Thanks!com/b.js>
From: Jim
A: Hi Jim,
Yes Perch and Chub can be caught by lure fishing, small Mepp’s style spinners are good for both, but for Chub often a bigger lure works, especially on the surface, there are many lures available for Chub even some that look like small mice and others that are fished on the surface called poppers, best of luck and good fishing.

Q: hi, can we catch dace or rudd
by using small-size spinners?
From: JIM
A: Hi Jim,
It is fairly unusual to catch Dace or Rudd on spinner, but not impossible, I have caught them when fishing for Trout with very small Mepp’s type spinners, usually with a black feathers in the tail, however I have on many occasions caught them on very small black fly’s, good practice for catching trout.

I wrote to you earlier in the year re. fishing tips for Lake Naivasha, Kenya. Unfortunately I was unable to fish as the Government has banned all commercial & recreational fishing for 6 months due to overfishing which is a good move but unfortunate at the time!
Anyway, am looking to start course fishing in the UK.
How do I go about acquiring a course fishing license for Southern England? Do I need one?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards

A: Hi Dan,
Sorry to hear that you could not get to fish Naivasha and it is news to me i had not heard they had banned fishing, but i do agree a wise move.
Yes you do need a coarse fishing license and they can be obtained from any Post Office, best of luck with your fishing in the UK.

Q: I have the opportunity to fish in Spain on a regular basis, as a relative has recently moved to the Alicante/Valencia area. We are interested in catfish, barbel and carp but as yet have not discovered many waters with decent sporting potential for these species. Any suggestions?
Do the Carp Society, or similar organisation, have a contact in Spain that might be able to provide local information?<
From: Adam Malin
A: Hi Adam,
The river Ebro at Rio Ebro Catalunya, Costa Dorada, not far from the resort of Salou, is the place you are looking for, famous for massive Cat Fish, Carp and Barbel, there is a lodge called The Ebro lodge situated near Tortosa and this is where a great deal of fishing takes place, there are companys that run package holidays out to their but I guess you will be going it alone, the Carp society I am sure will have a great deal of info as does Kevin Maddocks he has fished in this area many times he runs his angling video distribution company at Withy Pool near Bedford and will be a mine of information, the best of luck and keep us informed as to how you get on.
This also may be of help and please have a look at out Ebro report in the International reporting section.

Q: Hi Andy,
I read with interest in the latest edition of Coarse Fisherman that SBS baits
are now available again. A long time ago I bought some Frank n Furter flavouring
from this company. This was one of my most productive flavourings, accounting for
a number of double figure barbel and medium size chub from the Great Ouse in the mid nineties.
As I ran out of my small supplies a long time ago, I have been desperate to get hold
of some new stocks. I was wondering if you could provide me with the address
of SBS baits, or at least an outlet from which I can purchase some of this flavouring.
Thanks for your help in this matter.
Kind regards
Mark
From: Mark Austin
A: Hi Mark,
Good to hear from you, I note with interest that you have been using this high protein bait on the Great Ouse where the recent Barbel record fell, it appears that the fish are growing rapidly due to the extensive use of this type of bait, it will not be long before the fish are over 20lbs.
To answer your question the company in question is S.B.S International PO Box 100, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 3LE Tel 01502 511777 Fax 01502 511788

Q: with the resent flooding our river side lake was flooded completley.in your opinion would the fish go searching new food sources, and if so would they go with the flow or against it .thanks
From: c.southwell
A: Dear C Southwell re your flooding, often in these cases as when a river floods badly the fish take shelter under the bank side much like they would say in a backwater on a river, so the odds are that most have stayed preferring the shelter than braving a raging flood, if some did leave the likely hood is they will have gone down stream rather than swimming against the currant, however if you had Trout in your lake they are much more adventurous and unfortunately will have lost many, hope the stocks are still there when it calms down, best of luck and let us know how you get on.http

Q: we have some fishing on a trib of the severn, trout stocks have declined and the increased rate of agrochemicals, extraction and predation by man, along with goosanders, herons mink and the like does not help. i think that stocks are not capable of supporting themselves without stocking and we have done so for a few years now, it has helped a lot, we toyed with the idea of brook trout but were told these were no longer allowed by the EA but can't find a reason for this do you know, would they be more viable?
From: Steve Metcalfe
A: Hi Steve,
Good question, a problem that is raising its head now on many rivers, the Severn is not too far away from me and I have fished it on many occasions but not sure which tributary you mean.
With regard to the predation of Goosanders, Herons and Mink, you can apply for a licence from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to shoot Goosanders and Cormorants but unfortunately they make you go through many hoops and loops before gaining one and then it will be very limited, Heron you will really have to live with and they won’t be the main problem.
Mink can be sorted by laying traps, suggest once you catch them you give them back to the do gooders who released them in to the wild in the first place!!! They have no idea what damage to fish stocks and wild life their irresponsible actions caused.
In the Lake District we even persuaded the council to have some dedicated Mink trappers as the problem was so bad and it worked.
My experience and that of many others re Brook Trout is not good, they have a very poor survival rate especially in our rivers, you are right re the legality of stocking them now, since the problem with non indigenous species like Cat Fish and Zander, they really clamped down on this.
Best way forward is to do some habitat improvement renovating spawning areas for Trout in the main tributary and small feeder streams and have a long term policy of re-stocking in way of juvenile fish rather than have a quick fix of stocking with bigger fish, however it will have to be a compromise at the end of the day to keep members happy, I hope this is of some help.

A: Dear Colin,
With regard to the Shrimper and Worming rod a new version will be available shortly and will inform you when available.
Andy Dickson has very kindly provided the following information.
Forbes
I don't know the Upper Nithsdale Club waters at all well. I've only
fished it once about 15 years ago. I have however fished a lot
of the other beats on the Nith, including the Duke of Buccleuch's water
immediately downstream.
It's an excellent stretch of water, possibly more suited to worm and
spinner than fly, but there are suitable fly stretches at well.
Your tackle sounds absolutely fine - what I use myself at this time.
I would suggest a couple of fast sinking Polyleaders so you can ring the
changes in fishing depth without going the whole hog and going over to a
sinking line.
Flies and lures. Here you should be thinking Autumn colours. Where earlier
in the season salmon would cheerfully take blue and silver coloured flies
and lures, now they are much more likely to take gold, orange, black and
red.
So flies with gold bodies, orange, black or red hair wings - or better
still a mixture like the Bourach. Spinners similarly coloured - black and
gold rather than blue and silver. Don't forget the Flying "C" fished as
originally intended, cast virtually straight upstream and retrieved as
fast as possible. This will sometimes stir them up when nothing else will.
Now although I don't know the water well I know a man who does (as they
say). I have spoken to Davy Tait at Thornhill, downstream from Sanquhar.
Davy is Chairman of Mid Nithsdale AA and is perfectly happy for you to
phone him for a chat. He is a dedicated Nith Angler and can give you more
detail than I can. His number is 01848 330958.

Q: Dear Andy,
I am still at school and had my 16th birthday last week. I asked for a fishing rod and was given an extendable telescopic one. As I have a small paper-run I have been told to save up money for some tackle/bait/wellies, but I am most interested in tackle just now.
I will be fishing in a small pond just outside Coatbridge, in Scotland. What tackle do you advise for someone of my age.? And, at my age and experience, is tackle size/weight important for my extendable rod.?
Thanks,
Brian Hughes
From: Brian Hughes
A: Dear Brian,
Good to hear from you and that you are taking up this wonderfull past time.
With regard to what tackle you require, your rod should idealy be at least ten foot long and not too stiff as you will be using fine lines and float fishing, you will need a good quality fixed spool reel with two spools, enabling you to fill one spool with 3 to 4lb line and the other with say 8lb line for bigger fish.
I would suggest that you buy a selection of floats for still water fishing, wagglers are ideal, float stops, a six way shot dispenser plus some ledger weights a disgorger is very important, a selection of hooks ranging from size 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8 will suffice a bait box will be handy along with a rod rest, landing net and keep net and either a tackle box or seat box to sit on and put all your tackle in.
You will have to work out what budget you have and then go to a good tackle shop and explain that you are just starting up and this is the money you have to spend and these are the basic items you require, the better tackle you buy at this stage the longer it will last, you will, as you carry on fishing be able to build up the amount of tackle you have as you find out what species and methods you like fishing for and with, there are some good fishing books available for you to read to find out the basics and your local tackle shop will advise you of angling clubs that you can join with local waters, many of the members will be very keen to give you sound advice which is most important.
If there is any more advise please do not hesitate to contact me and the best of luck and good safe fishing.

Q: I have just started fishing (mainly for crabs with a bit of string) now I want to go for something a little bigger. What would you suggest I go for next ?
thanks
Davidhttp://www.ba
From: david
A: Dear David,
How good to hear from you, somehow i do not feel you have yet quite mastered this very gentle art of crab catching, so before I launch you into a higher level of piscatorial adventures maybe we should concentrate a little more on refining your technique in catching CRABS.
The width of string is vital and should be of a fine nature and the bait very important, fatty pork rind is my choice, tied to the line with a simple granny knot Weight might have to be added dependant upon the tide, after lowering your line into the sea it is very important to have a fine touch so takes can be detected and hold on tight as there are some very big crabs about.
I Would be very grateful to see a photo of your biggest crab and I would be delighted to post it in our photo gallery for all to see and i do hope you operate a catch and release policy!
Once I have seen the quality of crabs you are catching I will recommend the next steps.
Tight Lines and happy crabbing.

Q: HELLO.
I'M COMING OVER FOR A HOLIDAY,STAYING AT THE ORROLAND ESTATES,NEAR DUMFRIES.I LIKE TO FISH .I WOULD LIKE INFORMATION ON FISHING PERMITS AND LIMITS
From: RICHARD SARAN
A: Thank you for your interest and quetion, the only Orroland I can find is near Dundrennan, on the Solway coast about 8 miles east of Kirkcudbright. It's between the Kirkcudbrightshire Dee and the Urr, the local towns surrounding the area are Kirkcudbright to the west, Castle Douglas to the north and Dalbeattie to the east, with Dumfries another 14 miles further east.
The Kirkcudbrightshire Dee is a ruined salmon river which had 7 hydro electric dams built on it in the 1920's and 30's. There are still a few salmon in it and even fewer sea trout. The system contains a lot of pike, particularly in the famous Loch Ken, allegedly the scene of the capture of a pike of 72 pounds on a fly made with a peacock eye feather in the 1700's.
The river Dee is well known for large brown trout, which are not easy to catch, and it remains quite a large river despite the dams, which of course can result in sudden rises in water level. It is generally true of lochs in Kirkcudbrightshire that if there are pike there will be decent brown trout; whereas if there are no pike there will be thousands of 3 inch brown trout.
The River Urr on the other hand is a much smaller river and very much a spate river. In the right conditions it produces surprising numbers of salmon and sea trout for its size, but it does not fish well unless it's a few inches above normal level - mind you, one night of rain is enough to raise it a foot.
For both rivers, enquire for permits at Tommy's Sports shop, 178 King Street, Castle Douglas, DG7 1DA, Tel No. 01556 502851. National Trust for Scotland also have a stretch of the Dee just outside Castle Douglas at Threave. Contact the Ranger, Bob Elliot on 01556 502575 for details.
Further east of course is the Nith, which runs through Dumfries. The Nith is the cream of the rivers running into the Solway. Fishing on the Nith is divided among various clubs and individual landowners, but virtually the whole river is available to the visiting angler. Prices range from £10 per day to "If you have to ask the price you can't afford it."
Useful starting point to enquire about Nith Fishings is Stuart Rammell at nithsalmon@aol.com Stuart has contacts for most beats on the river and does things like guided night fishing for sea trout etc. There used to be a website, but it seems to have vanished.
The Dumfries and Galloway Angling Association, despite the grand name, has about 3 miles of the Nith, just to the north of Dumfries and about 11 miles of the Cairn, a major tributary. Contact is Mr. Raymond Marshall, 8 Back Row, Gasstown, Dumfries. DG1 3JH, who is Sec/Treas. Permits also from McMillans Tackle shop, Friars Vennel, Dumfries.

THEY LIVE IN KENTON OUTSIDE OF LONDON. I AM LOOKING FOR A SUITABLE LOCATION CLOSE TO THEIR HOME FOR BOTH FLY FISHING AND SPINNING. IN ADDITION, I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR A SPOT WITHIN 50 MILES OF LONDON TO TAKE MY WIFE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS JUST FOR FLY FISHING.
THANKS IN ADVANCE
From: henry miller
A: Dear Henry,
Thank you for your enquiry and interest in Angling News, in answer to your question of taking your grandsons fishing, I presume for trout near to their home my suggestion would be at Syon Park, Brentford near to Kew gardens, this would be fly fishing only for trout, I do not know of any where that caters for and allows spinning in trout waters in that locality.
With regard to fishing for you and your wife within a 50-mile radius, for a couple of days my suggestion would be to visit Hayward’s Farm at Theal near Reading, they have two lakes, 11acres and 5 acres it is a premier Trout water with some really big Trout, contact Mike Stratton on telephone number 01189 323422, they will be able to recommend local accommodation.

Q: Dear Andy , I hope you are well, I know you from your programmes which I think are very good.
I would like to ask you a question in realation to catching very big trout, I live in the centre of Ireland beside a lake called lough Gowna, It has a lot of very very big trout, which are very difficult to catch, they average around 10lbs. there are anly about 10 trout caught each year , they are only caught during spring, and a lot are caught at pike competitions using deadbait, the biggest this year so far was nearly 17lbs.Could you give me some information on how to try and catch these, or do you know of any rigs for trolling dead roach at a good depth. Thank you for your help
Adrian Hudson
From: adrian Hudson
A: Dear Adrian,
I most certainly am well especially after a well earned break (guess what) fishing in Ireland, had some great Salmon on the Moy and seatrout as well as trout to the May fly and even Tench, many thanks for your kind comments.
Now on to answer your question, the trout you are talking about are without doubt Ferox trout or cannibals as some call them but a specie all in its own right, you are right they are best caught in the spring as it is at this time after the winter months they are at their feeding peak but can be caught at other times of the year, season permitting.
Normally they are to be found in the depths of a Lough and the best bait is a Char that is if there are any there, if not a trout, live baiting is frowned upon however it is a successful method.
The method I have seen used on Loughs like Corrib is they load the inside of the trout dead bait with lead a great array of trebles and slowly troll it through the depths, this method can best be described as crude.
Trolling is without doubt the best methods to take these big chaps and this is where the new technology comes into to play, a good sound safe boat is essential along with a depth sounder and a down rigger is the method of fishing the majority of the Ferox anglers use.
A simple rig of a treble in the lip of the trout dead bait and another towards the tail is all you need, this is then connected to the quick release system of the downrigger and lowered to the prescribed depth a bait runner reel is best allowing you to free spool if you get a take. The best method by use of the depth sounder is to work and troll the ledges and drop offs in the Lough as these are the areas the Ferox favour but several are taken in the open water especially in the spring time when they are marauding, it is important to watch the depth on the sounder and continually alter it keeping it as deep as possible to the shelves, they are often caught in water of 70 ft or more.
As space does not allow me any more explanation please feel free to ring me on
0044 1948 871399 if you have any further questions.
There are two very good books written on the subject one by Ron Greer "Ferox Trout" and published by Swan hill Press and the other by John Bailey "Fishing For Ferox" published by Crowood Press.
Best of Luck & Tight Lines.

Q: Andy,
I have the shrimping and worming rod you designed. On it, I have (so far) caught Barbel, Carp, Sea Bass, Pike and more than one Salmon. what, out of interest, is the things test curve? I am guessing at about 2lbs.
Regards Barryh
From: Barry Leeson
A: Dear Barry,
Good to hear from you and am delighted that you have caught so many different fish on the rod, like you i use mine for just about everything, it is a bit like driving a car you get used to all the different capabilities of the rod and then know how far to push it. The biggest Salmon i have taken on this rod is 27lb on 6lb line and have caught Sailfish in Kenya up to 68lb so i have tested it almost to destruction but failed to do so as yet.
With regard to the test curve, the rod was never designed with a test curve in mind, i wanted certain qualities in a rod that did not excist especialy for Salmon and Sea trout, the rod had to be able to be fished with a fine line along with stronger lines and be capable of casting small weights and be very sensative to detect bites but also be capable of a fast pick up on the take and strike and then have enough beef to be able to play and fight a big fish. The length was also very important enabling correct control while fishing, so all these factors and many more came into play while designing the rod, however we did test the curve of the rod and it was around 1& 1/4 lb but it is not really relavent, hope this goes someway in answering your question and that you catch many more species on your rod.ht

Q: I am a postgraduate student at Heriot-Watt University, undertaking a research project examining the issues of seals entering salmon rivers.
I am concentrating on 6 key rivers in Scotland, namely the Dee, Don, Esk, Spey, Tay and Tweed. I would be extremely
grateful if you could supply me with any information that you feel is relevant to this topic.
If you have any information on seals entering rivers other than the six above, could you please let me Know.
From: Miss Michaela Kavanagh
A: 20.7.000
Dear Miss Kavanagh,
Interesting to hear from you in respect to your project, I do not have a complete list of rivers that have a proliferation of seals, however I do now that they enter other rivers in Scotland such as the Brora and Beauly and in Wales the rivers Towey and the Dovey, one of the more interesting situations is on the river Moy in County Mayo Sth Ireland 10 to 12 years ago there were just a few seals that lived on the sand banks in the estuary over the preceding years due to lack of control their numbers have considerably grown to reputedly around 60 to 70 this has now caused a problem in the fact that there is now not enough food for them in their habitat and have become extremely bold in following shoals of Salmon and Seatrout up the river into the town of Ballina where they maraud in the pools called the Cathedral and Ridge pool not only eating the fish but causing a great deal of damage to the travelling fish many resulting in terminal damage.
Here there is a need for some sort of culling activities but due to the sensitive nature of this subject it is a difficult one to approach and deal with but clearly some action has to be taken to resolve this problem and I suspect this will be reflected on many other areas and rivers and conflict will ensue as many of these river systems and surrounding areas rely on Angling to boost their economy.
It is worth noting that for every rod caught Salmon taken in Scotland it is worth approx £3750.00 to the local economy, the major rivers in the UK and Ireland can be found on our web site many with contacts that you would be able to follow up on i.e. where to stay and fish.
I wish you well with your project and would be interested to see the outcome.
Yours sincerely
Andy Nicholson

Q: Andy - see my latest report. Is 367 lbs of bream in a day, a record for Upper Lough Erne??
Best wishes,
Charlescom/b
From: Charles Plunket
A: Dear Charles,
Very many thanks for reporting such an amazing catch, if it is not a record it certainly should be one, at present i have contacted our Irish angling chap Nick Parry who writes for the Sun and both of us are trying our best to find out the relavent information and will post up on the site as soon as we have sourced it.
In the mean time Irish readers of the Sun will be able to read more about it in the Sun and check out the Belle Isle web site as this is where the action is happening, i am sure there is much more to come.
Thanks to Charles for the information and report.com/b

Q: My wife and I are shortly spending two weeks in the Dornoch area of Sutherland and I was thinking about taking my beach fishing gear with me and chancing my arm. Any info on 'hot' spots, tactics and locations for beach fishing would be appreciated!
From: Dr. Mark Brookes
A: Dear Dr Mark Brookes,
Many thanks for your question, you will be going to an area that i know well and i have to say is stunning not only for the countryside but also the fishing, i have fished the Brora and the Helmsdale for the last 20 years and on the lower beats in the town waters it is either free or very reasonably priced.
With regard to the beach fishing that entire coast line can be very productive, with plenty of Cod, Pollock, Coal fish and many other species to be caught, it may be wise for you to take some light spining gear with you as one of the added options you will have is catching sea trout in the sea and the estuarys, they can also be taken in the sea by fly, the coal fish can also be taken on the spinner.
I would advise you on arrival to visit the two local angling shops located in the towns of Brora and Helmsdale their local advise will be very useful, if you require any more information please do not hesitate to ring me on 01948 871399 and i wish you a good visit and tight lines.

Q: We will be traveling to Wales, staying at a resort in Little haven. We would like to so some fishing. What is required for a foreigner to fish in Wales waters? What will be the temperature of the Weather in the first week of October. What kind of equipment do I need to fish.

A: I would like some more details from you to answer this. Where is Little Haven and what type of fishing are you wanting?(It sounds like you want seafishing, but I need you to be specific

Q: Do you agree with the one fish rule that most Scottish rivers have as an unwritten rule these days bearing in mind how expensive it is to fish the rivers in Scotlandcom
From: Alan Parker
A: Not all waters operate this rule and I am afraid this type of rule has been very much influenced by the American way of fishing and thinking. I do not think this rule of only keeping one fish and returning all others is a particular good one but in this day and age of conservation there has to be a happy medium. A lot of anglers, rules or no rules put the majority of their fish back nowadays and that is their choice, I happen to be one of those anglers that return most of mine and keep the odd one for the table.
I feel a compromise of keeping two salmon in a day's fishing would be more fair, then at least after you have banked the first one you then can make a considered choice on any others you catch.com/b.

Q: I have been reading Trout & Salmon May 2000, on the report on the Brora fish have been caught on an Alistair fly. What is the dressing of an Alistair
From: Malcolm Newbould
A: After a little research, here it is: This is very much a Sutherland pattern (Brora, Helmsdale,Thurso, Naver) and normally tied as a tube; variations on doubles and X2Bs. It's also very simple;
Body:bright gold flat tinsel
Rib: fine gold oval
Wing: orangey gold fine hair (squirrel or Arctic fox is fine)or mix. of yellow/brown
Tail: same as wing, but optional.
There are, as with all popular flies, many variations. For this pattern the most common is to substitute the gold for copper.
