CARP fishing could be about to get the Japanese treatment as a consortium of firms bid to launch the sport in Japan. The move sees giants Shimano and Daiwa working together to push the sport in their home markets and is also backed by Pure Fishing and European accessories giant Korda. Daiwa has obtained the exclusive distribution of Korda as well as designing its own series of exclusive Japanese carp rods, which sell under the Maddragon name.
Toshi Usuda at Daiwa in Japan, told TTW: “We see a big potential in Japan for carp fishing – enough of a potential to design and develop rods specifically for the Japanese market, instead of lifting them ‘off the peg’ from Europe.”
The rods are slightly longer and stiffer than European rods, with much more of a through action.
Korda is also serious about the market, with Adam Penning and Damian Clarke on hand at the Yokohama show in Japan to talk to Japanese consumers.
