Irish Angling Update Ezine

Written By: Paul Bourke On Date: 21/9/2014 The Indian summer conditions continued throughout Ireland for another week but while the salmon fishing was badly affected, the trout fishing on rivers and loughs has improved generally. The bright calm and often foggy conditions nationwide did make fishing tougher but coarse and pike anglers caught plenty of fish. Sea fishing was excellent all around the coast with bass fishing a little tougher lately Fishing was tough on River Boyne but some nice salmon were reported from the Slane and Rossin waters. It was tough going for anglers fishing the Munster Blackwater but some nice grilse were landed on the fly along with some nice sea trout up to 3 lb. which were all released. Angling guide Jason Nash reports better sea trout fishing on the River Bandon. It was another poor week for salmon fishing on most rivers in Co. Donegal as the good weather and low water conditions are still the norm on all fisheries and the Drowes produced only three grilse but one nice salmon of 14 lb. for the week. It was Non-stop Action for the Young anglers at International Team Qualifier held on Lough Bane last weekend with some lovely trout recorded on the day. David Tantrum reports from Waterford on some wonderful brown trout fishing on Knockaderry Fishery last week. Angling guide Paddy Dunworth had parties of American visitors out fishing for trout on the Deel and the Maigue and they enjoyed some nice sport on the fly. Angling guide Mick Flanagan had a busy week on Lough Owel with clients from Germany and the Netherlands catching some nice trout and perch. Fishing picked up on Loughs Conn and Cullin with good trout coming to the fly. Despite the low water conditions and bright weather anglers fishing on Lough Melvin enjoyed some fine sport on the fly for Sonaghan and Gillaroo trout. Charter skipper Hamish Currie reported some very big porbeagle shark to his boat for his clients which were tagged and released while fishing out from Red Bay in Co. Antrim. The biggest estimated at nearly 300 lb. was caught by Robin van da Meer from the Netherlands which wins our Catch of the Week. Only one tope was reported on a recent small boat trip out from Kilkeel in Co. Down. The Irish boat ‘Screaming Reels’ has won the Rosslare Small Boats festival for the fourth year in a row recording 32 different species of fish and beating 35 other boats from Britain and Ireland. In the same area, a group of sea anglers from Bordeaux had some fine bass while fishing with angling guide Jim Hendrick. Another angling guide Ger Doran had groups of anglers out bass fishing in the south east and they managed some nice fish in difficult conditions. Dubliner “Joe” was delighted to catch his first bass in south Wexford with angling guide Sean Jordan on a lure. Well known kayak angler, Gary Robinson reports that he had some excellent sport for big tope off the Wexford coast. Angling guide Richie Ryan caught his bass of a lifetime, a fine specimen of 11.3 lb. on a plug in Cork Harbour last week during a difficult period for bass fishing in general. Anglers fishing shore marks on the Beara Peninsula enjoyed great fishing with many species including some specimen Ballan Wrasse. Tomasz Ekert of Sea Bass Hunting in Kerry had some good bass fishing at marks in Co. Kerry while night and day fishing with a variety of baits. Craig Murphy from the Dublin Angling Centre caught some good trigger fish and bullhuss while fishing at several locations in Co. Kerry. Shore fishing on the south Donegal coast has picked up well with good quality pollack and wrasse regularly coming to the rod at most good shore marks. At Rosses point, the shore and boat fishing was excellent with some nice trigger fish also reported in catches. At Mullaghmore, a fine 200 lb. skate was caught and released on the “Kiwi Girl” skippered by Declan Kilgannon. Good catches of quality of Bream and hybrids were reported from the River Shannon at Portumna where English anglers enjoyed some tremendous fishing. Regular English visitors John Wilson and his son Stephen had a great holiday catching good catches of coarse fish and pike on loughs, rivers and the royal canal in the midlands. The bright and windless conditions made fishing difficult for the many English, Irish and other anglers from many European countries fishing the two big festivals at venues in Cavan, Leitrim and Fermanagh. There were new winners of the World Pairs this year and Adam Wakelin and Rob Wootton from the UK are the new champions and Sean Higginbottom was crowned King of Clubs champion at Arvagh. Wayne Fuller won the Belturbet Festival the previous week. Angling guide Pierre Monjarret reports another good week for anglers fishing with him on Lough Derg near Killaloe with several more fish over a metre while lure fishing. Angling guide Mick Flanagan reported that the humble silver spoon worked the magic for clients fishing on Lough Ennell for some good pike fishing. Michael Burke won the pike charity competition up in Boyle last weekend with a cracking pike while fishing on Lough Kee. German anglers enjoyed some great pike action with fish to 115 cms. while fishing in the Foxford area with angling guide Paddy McDonnell. Remember please wear a life jacket when you go afloat whether it is on inland waters or at sea.
