Irish Angling Update

Written By: Myles Kelly
On Date: 15/10/2017

It was a wet and windy week, though there were times when the weather was almost (almost!) summery. Sunday was particularly fair across much of the country, but the last few days have seen conditions deteriorate Some of the highlights..
Sweeney and Leese win Irish Continental Pairs
Anglers report flounder and bass at Wicklow beach
Sheelin gets busy as season comes to a close
The last weekend of the season on Sheelin was busy with numerous competitions and a number of other anglers out for a last cast. With all the activity it was not surprising that catches were up. The heaviest fish for the week weighed in 8lbs 2ozs caught by Dublin angler Aleksander Mlynarski using a black & silver Humungus fishing out from Church Island. End of season competitions on Ennell and Lene were also well attended and anglers reported good fishing.

One of 6 good pike caught in 50 minutes by Kevin in his new boat
Kevin Lyons added a new boat to his fleet, a fast, modern, bass boat style vessel, and on delivery took it for a spin with some fishing added. Kevin marked the occasion with 6 good pike in 50 minutes. Not a bad start at all. Lough Kinale in Cavan has also had some good fishing reported. In this case it was numbers rather than size as the jacks proved hungry and the bite was on. Moving down the Shannon we have reports from Derg where pike to 95cm were caught in the Boathouse Cup.

Padraig O’Riordan had just short of 70lb! This catch wins him Catch of the Week
Padraig O’Riordan fished a stick float on a River Inny to catch 69lb of roach – winning him Catch of the wek. Also out was Paul McLoughlin who had 62lb on waggler on swim just 20 yards up the river. Fishing at the Fermoy Autumn Festival started well but got tougher over the following days. Cork angler Trevor Platt was the winner with a total weight of 37lb. The Irish Continental Pairs was fished on Lough Sillan recently. A lot of cold rain had put the fish off a little and catches were not as heavy as hoped. At the end of the 3 day event Brenton Sweeney and Paul Leese emerged as winners.
The Irish Kayak Angling Club were out on Cork Harbour last weekend. There were 11 species caught and while most of the fish were small there were some good ones mixed. A couple of good Pollock were landed and 10 year old Sean had cracking Ballan around 53cm. In other sea angling news some of Wicklow’s beaches have been fishing well recently with flounder and the odd bass reported.
Any anglers lucky enough to have caught a specimen fish in 2017 are reminded to submit claim forms to get their claim forms in soon. Anglers with specimen claims for shad and cyprinids (roach, rudd and their hybrids), which require genetic analysis for positive identification, are requested to submit their claims to the Irish Specimen Fish Committee by immediately to ensure samples processed in 2017. All other claims should be submitted by 15th November.
Anglers hoping to get out over the weekend should keep a close eye on the forecast. Met Eireann advises that the changeable and very unsettled weather will continue through the weekend , with the threat of some very high impact weather on Monday due to the remnants of hurricane Ophelia.
Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.
