Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Latest news from Glenda Powell Guiding & Blackwater Salmon Fishery Planning for the Fishing Season of 2018 Irish Fly Fair - Galway Bay Hotel 11th & 12th November Fishing Course Dates 2018 ''Each life is made up of mistakes and learning, waiting and growing, practicing patience and being persistent.''
Billy Graham
How true this quote is from Billy Graham about life. We can also use this when we think about fishing. We sometimes learn the hard way when we don't tie on our fly securely, or don't check our tackle properly in the rush to get out the door to go fishing. Fishing can be a game of waiting, and practicing patience can only be learned with time. Persistence will catch the fish, and one of our guests wrote this year when a pod of fish moved through. A moment of sublime exhilaration in a desert of barren tedium. Fishing can be a hard game to play and especially salmon fishing. I believe that it is one of the greatest teachers of patience.

We must never stop learning and lots of new technology has moved into our sport in the past number of years. As an angler and casting instructor for me it is important to understand the changes in our modern equipment and to move with the times. I really enjoy learning, and get excited when a new rod or line comes on the market for us to try. Fly fishing instructors call them tools, to most other anglers they are simply toys. The instructor makes it into a ''job'' to go and ''test'' (play) with their ''tools'' (toys). Who else could get away for hours on end playing with rods and lines on football fields and flooded rivers in the closed season with a piece of fluff on the end? Yes, we are truly blessed individuals.

I am leaving in a couple of hours to travel to the Galway Fly Fair - ''work'' of course - and I look forward to meeting some of you there over the weekend. I have been asked to give a single handed demonstration at the fair and I can't wait to help you learn a little bit more about single handed Spey Casting and Micro Skagits. My demonstration is the first demo each day on Saturday and Sunday, downstairs and outside on the grass area.

Our fishing courses were very popular this year and we will be running them again in 2018. Course dates and details are below.

We thank our customers once again for supporting us this year and we are now taking bookings for 2018.
