ADRENALINE-FUELLED SAL****ER FLY FISHING IN ASCENSION BAY, MEXICO Farlows Travel has just returned from an excellent trip to Punta Allen Fishing Club in Mexico, one of the best value and most accessible sal****er fly fishing operations out there.
Ascension Bay is renowned for the opportunity to catch a ‘Grand Slam’ of permit, tarpon and bonefish and the village of Punta Allen is known as the ‘Permit Capital of the World’. Despite poor weather on arrival, conditions improved rapidly and we were soon experiencing great fishing, seeing lots of permit (even catching a few!) and various other species, including large migratory tarpon.
The lodge is excellent, with great food that alternates the French and Italian cuisine of the owners with local Mexican dishes. Although not in a beach front position, the lodge is within minutes of the water, the staff were excellent and the guides knew the huge area of flats and lagoons intimately.
The lodge can be reached via a direct flight from the UK to Cancun and then a four-hour vehicle transfer.
Prices are available for any length of trip, for example:
5 nights’ full board accommodation and 4 days’ guided fishing £1690 per person.
7 nights’ full board accommodation and 6 days’ guided fishing £2450 per person.
Not including international flights and transfers.
