Last Thursday Rachel Hamilton, Conservative MSP for Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire, highlighted the downturn of salmon numbers to the Scottish Parliament.
Parliament noted that angling in Scotland supports around 2,800 jobs and contributes £100 million to the economy; acknowledged that fishing generates significant employment opportunities in rural areas; recognises that there are significant challenges ahead if salmon stocks are to return to previous levels, and notes the calls for the Scottish Government to take urgent action to devise effective conservation and management plans in conjunction with relevant bodies to help address what it sees as the persistent decline in salmon stocks - watch again.
Later this month four friends will be running 3 marathons in 3 days along 3 of Scotland's iconic salmon rivers; Oykel, Spey and Tweed. On day 4, Will Davies will also run the London Marathon. They are doing this in aid of the Atlantic Salmon Trust, who are the only UK charity whose work is devoted exclusively to the conservation of wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout. Spring Salmon

Fishing Reports
Paul Norman fishing Ballathie on the River Tay.
The Dee finished the week with 33 fish to 17lb. Lower Crathes had 5 for the week. Banchory had 2 for the week. Swedish visitor, Anders Thylen had a 9lbr from Jock Adams and Yusuke Mii from Japan had 1 from Greenbank. Alan Lankshear had Cambus' only fish from the Long Pool. Alan is 95 years of age, and I am sure I am not alone in being hugely impressed and not a little inspired by him. Find Fishing.
The Tay. Those anglers that did brave the elements on the River Tay last week were rewarded for their efforts, as the Tay system continued to produce some lovely hard fighting spring salmon on a regular basis. Cargill Beat seemed to be the place to be on Monday with rods bent galore. There were a total of nine fish hooked and five springers landed weighing up to fourteen pounds. Find Fishing.

The Findhorn had ideal river levels for the first two days of last week, however, it was quiet on both of the Altyre beats, with very few fish seen. It seemed that we were in between runs of fish and needing a little more in the way of water to encourage more fish into the river system! Little did we realise what was on the way, hurtling in from the Atlantic! Find Fishing.

Trout Fishing
In the middle stretches of the river Don there is a hidden gem. Kemnay Angling Club is nestled between the famous beats of Monymusk and Fetternear Estates and consists of one and a quarter mile of South bank fishing and a short section of North bank fishing.
The water holds a good number of salmon throughout the season due to the various pools, fast rushes and long deep glides present. It also does very well for sea trout from June onward. Wild brown trout are abundant in this part of the river with some large specimen trout of 5lb+ not uncommon. April and May are the best months to try for these brownies but they can be caught throughout the season with some skill - read more.

Two rods are wanted to join a fishing party on the Spey, Castle Grant 2, from Sunday 7 July to Sunday 14 July. The price, £2,000 per rod, includes accommodation at Inverallan House, all meals including lunch, and your fishing for the week.
