Spring has sprung: time to get fishing

Written By: E. A.

The clocks have changed, the days are brighter and longer – it’s time to get back out there! Why not have fun as a family this Easter, take a friend or just enjoy some well-earned springtime peace and quiet? Whatever fishing licence you need, get one today so you’re ready to enjoy a cracking Easter (see what we did there?). Don’t forget to check your expiry date before you buy and only buy online through GOV.UK to be sure you are not paying unnecessary fees.
Crackdown at Mythe Pool

Sometimes we come up against some pretty tricky situations while working to protect fisheries. And Operation STONE was certainly one of those times. Our team confronted a group fishing illegally and taking fish, around midnight at a pool controlled by Birmingham Angling Association. Needless to say the situation was very obstructive and aggressive.

Thanks to Environment Agency intelligence led approach to enforcement we had officers on the ground at the right time and were able to successfully arrest them for fisheries offences. This is just one of the ways that fishing licence funds help support our fantastic sport.

Salmon and people in a changing world

There is a lot of fascinating work happening to celebrate the International Year of The Salmon. The North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO), with facilitation from Salmon and Trout Conservation, have produced a video narrated by the wonderful David Attenborough to showcase the importance of protecting these beautiful fish.

Fish disease threats: how you can help reduce the risk

New disease risks to fisheries are always on the horizon, and some have the potential to cause significant damage. The Environment Agency is at the forefront of detecting and controlling the spread of new and emerging diseases such as Carp Edema Virus (CEV) seen in the picture above.

This deadly virus was first found in the UK following Environment Agency led investigations into significant carp deaths in fisheries. To minimise the risk of spreading CEV and other diseases to fisheries, good biosecurity is key. Always check, clean and dry your equipment and report any signs of fish dying or in distress (Environment Agency Incident hotline: 0800 80 70 60).

You can now follow Calverton Fish Farm, the Environment Agency’s national coarse fish farm, on Instagram.

View their photos and videos for an insight into how they breed and nurture the fish before releasing them into rivers, lakes and ponds all over the country.
