Official launch of the Tyne Rivers Trust.

Written By: Jenny Cuthbertson
On Date: 8/3/2005

Speakers on the night will include Alistair Balls from Northumbrian Water, Margaret Fay, Chair from One NorthEast, Arlin Rickard, Chief Executive of the National Association of Rivers Trusts, Alistair Maltby, Director, Eden Rivers Trust, John Hogger, Environment Manager for the Environment Agency and Paul Torday, Chairman of the Tyne Trust.

The Trust has been working with local school, St Mary & St Thomas Acquinas Primary which is located on the Tyne’s bank in Stella, helping the children understand the environmental river issues.

Pupils from the school have created artwork, which will be on display for the first time at the launch, to help celebrate the important part the Tyne river plays in the community and the future educational benefits for local schools from working with the Trust.

The Trust has been established to improve the health of the river system, minimise the impact of continuing pollution and maximise the social and economic benefits of the river Tyne and its tributaries.

The Trust is set to have a major impact on the health of the river and the local community and a number of influential business and environmental leaders have already provided their support.

To arrange an interview or for more information contact, Paul Torday Rivers trust Chairman on 07884 310 799 Tordaypaul@aol.com or Andrew Davison on 0191 244 2950, adavison@robertmuckle.co.uk.

Tyne Rivers Trust has been established as a registered charity in 2004. It aims to pull together all existing research relating to the Tyne River, establish the priorities for further research and action and raise funds to implement those actions and take an over view of the combined effect of all the activities and projects taking place in and around the river.

It will identify and encourage best practice in the management of the river catchment. The Trust aims to work with organisations such as the Environment Agency, One NorthEast, DEFRA, WWF, land owners, schools and recreation bodies to encourage best practice in the management of the river to improve its long term future.

The first project is to pull together all existing information concerning the river, identify all those with an interest in the river and those already working to look after it, and to produce an Action Plan, prioritising the future work of the Trust.

The launch is being supported by local accountancy firm Armstrong Watson and solicitors Robert Muckle
