End of Season Report - 2014

Overall Season Catches: Poor
Most Sucessfull Methods: Fly
Biggest Fish: Twenty five pounds
Start Date of Season: 15 January

Highlights:
A slow start to the Eden salmon season with the spring run not really making a big presence until mid-March. The weather conditions did not help any with the persistent rain keeping levels on the high side for a great length of time. The season is really beginning to shape up now at the end of April with the more settled weather in attendance. It is only the north and east winds stopping any steady sport, when the westerlies are there the fishing is fantastic with good hatches of grannom at present and the trout averaging just over the pound.
The salmon are coming in steady, not big runs as yet but a small run off each tide and as far up as Waters Meet. There have been some hefty specimens taken on the fly the last few weeks and quite a few fish around the nine to ten pounds stamp. It is good to see the sea trout coming in this early on in the year, fish around the two pound mark with the odd lump amongst them them we are hoping that it may develop into something special by the mid summer onwards. May is always a great time of the season when the temperatures are perfect for most species, a time to really enjoy.
Better numbers of sea trout entering the river this season, the warm weather with low water really suits and the fishing is good during late evening and into the dark. The brown trout fishing has improved the last week of June and the salmon activity slowed, we cannot have it all.
All Rod Fisheries on the river Eden were requested to implement the following Voluntary Rod Conservation Measures as from Monday of this week when the Spring Salmon bye-law restrictions were lifted. A daily kill limit of 1 salmon per day, a maximum season kill limit of 6 salmon. A daily kill limit of 1 sea trout per day, a maximum season kill of 3 sea trout. All gravid cock and hen fish to be released in a responsible manner, quickly and safely as possible. To find out more details about the measures and the background behind them including the possible development and introduction of a gill tagging system for 2015 go to this page

The sea trout fishing at night has probably been the best the Eden has experienced for quite some time due to the low water conditions the fish are settling more in the pools. Well worth staying on to fish into dark, the brown trout fishing just on dusk is fantastic with some large specimens.

A very hot July with low water conditions. The trout and grayling fishing is excellent especially in the evenings. Only one half day of rainfall during the month, so with the low and warm conditions, although there are fish about the salmon fishing like everywhere else is suffering.

Early August rain has put the river levels up to where salmon can now run the river. There have been good movements of fish during early August of both grilse and salmon.
There have been some good salmon caught this second week of August, numbers of grilse and fish in the teens coming off the tides, things are looking up!

Some very good fish entering the Eden week commencing 18th August with two fish over twenty pounds.

August has been a mixed bag with periods of good salmon and trout fishing when the conditions have permitted. There have been a decent number of summer fish gone through and some big fish caught and lost, there seems to have been a fair number of grilse that have entered the river also. The Eden just needs a flood any time soon to bring the autumn run in, we shall see how that develops.

12/09/14
Still no water so no salmon, trout fishing excellent!

23/09/14
A few fish some coloured nosing in from the estuary with the promise of rain, we shall see!

07/10/14
Perfect conditions, good tides and very few fish running.

High water from poor weather has made the Eden on the week of the 20th unfishable. Looking forward to the start of the new salmon season on January 15th and enjoying the grayling fishing through the winter period.

November and into December the river levels have fluctuated often giving more unfishable days than fishable. When the water has been in good condition, the grayling fishing has been very good. As in the warmer months the fish around the ten ounce bracket and now on the pound mark that suddenly turned up are still showing an interest and some bigger specimens to around two pound making an appearance. There is some serious weather to come the next week or so as we speak on the 9th December, so it looks like it is back to the fly tying bench for us all!
