Fish of Britain & Europe, Collins Pocket Guide (Books and Videos)
Just occasionally you come across a little gem of a book and for me this was by pure chance, while exhibiting at the recent Go Fishing show in Birmingham I had the privilege of having my stand next to the unassuming Mick Loates wild life portrait and painter extraordinaire of man of huge talent who’s only failing is that of modesty, if I had such vast talent I would be shouting it from the roof tops.I was enthralled by watching his talent unravel as he created little masterpieces of any fish you could imagine on request by the awestruck angling public, he even produced a line drawing of my favourite fish the Sea Trout , that now proudly sits above my desk.Being of the nosy nature that I am, I trawled through the work that Mick not only had on show but were hidden in his many folders and I have to say some of the finest angling art work that I had ever seen was revealed, keen to extract more information he went on to explain that he had been commissioned to do the art work for Henry Williamson’s wonderful book Tarka The Otter, then as a by your leave he produced the Pocket Guide that he had created all the art work for, some 750 beautiful illustrations of fish from the UK and Europe, this master piece would be for many a lifetimes work, written by Peter Miller this 288 page book covers and introduces all the European fish faunas that you can imagine from familiar inhabitants of local rivers and lakes to the less frequently encountered but equally fascinating species of offshore waters, the beauty of both marine and freshwater species has been vividly and accurately described and illustrated in this magnificent book that is not only a wonderful read and reference point but will undoubtedly become a collectors item.Published by Harper Collins, priced £14.99 also available from Mick Loates at Tel/Fax 01548 580451 Address Hawkridge, Kiln Lane, Stokenham, Kingsbridge, South Devon TQ7 2SQ. this is a must buy.Mick also has an extensive range of original angling and wild life art work along with artists impressions and undertakes commissions.
